Job Description:

The Department of English & Communications seeks applications for a part-time adjunct faculty to teach the following for the spring 2020 semester:

ENGL 303 Writing Prose: Podcasting 3 cr

Gives students who have completed their foundational studies additional practice and instruction in writing nonfiction prose for podcasts. Explores the adaptation of such prose for podcasting. Individual courses may focus on prose writing in a particular discourse community (e.g., business, science and technology, education), which will be identified by subtitle.

ENGL 305 Magazine Writing and Editing 3 cr

Studies the art of writing and editing articles for magazines. Students will analyze current publications, write articles on subjects of their own choosing and practice editing skills. Class will include group critiques of written work and individual conferences.

ENGL 328 Issues in Journalism 3 cr

Discusses issues and problems central to the practice of journalism and the role of the media in a democratic society. Issues may include environmental journalism; media, law and ethics; investigative reporting; government, politics and the press; covering popular culture and others. Students may be required to produce journalism articles and/or commentaries based on those or related issues. Prerequisite: None

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Deliver instruction appropriate to the topic, course description, intended learning outcomes, level, and student audience.
  • Promote and facilitate student success by creating an environment conducive to learning and student involvement.
  • Manage the learning environment through effective record-keeping, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school/campus academic, code of conduct, and attendance policies.



Requirements:
  • MA or MS required, PhD in Communications related fields is strongly preferred.
  • Evidence of expertise, scholarly activity or creative work appropriate to the discipline.
  • Previous teaching experience at the college level is strongly preferred.


Requirements specific to ENGL 303 Writing Prose: Podcasting:

  • BA or BS in Communications related fields is required. MA or MS is preferred.
  • Evidence of expertise, scholarly activity or creative work appropriate to the discipline.
  • Expertise in audio software, such as GarageBand or Audacity.
  • Previous teaching experience at the college level is strongly preferred.

Please note that all part-time instructor postings are for adjunct pools. Positions may or may not be immediately available, however whenever openings occur, department chairs will turn to the adjunct pools to fill the openings.
