Director of Research and Evaluation - Institute for Community and Rural Health



The West Virginia University Institute for Community and Rural Health is seeking applications for a Director of Research and Evaluation. Under the direction of the Director of the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health, the Director of Research and Evaluation will work with internal and external partners to provide professional level support that includes program evaluation, research, grant writing activities and initiatives to forward the mission of West Virginia University, the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health (ICRH) and the WV Area Health Education Centers Program.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Direct and oversee all evaluation initiatives and efforts for the Institute and the WV AHEC Program.
  • Develop and conduct research of interest that aligns with overall ICRH mission and research agenda.
  • Work with rural health leadership and team members to refine and enhance the ICRH’s research agenda, including publications, around healthcare workforce recruitment and retention, rural health disparities, and rural health outcomes.
  • Work as part of a team to serve rural communities in West Virginia through education, outreach and research activities.
  • Operationalize strategic aspects of evaluation programs and policies to ensure that evaluation strategies conform to project goals and funding agencies’ planning and reporting needs and that evaluation strategies are feasible, cost effective and yield usable results.
  • Complete HRSA AHEC Program reporting requirements accurately and by deadlines including annual narrative, performance, and evaluation reports, under the guidance of the WV AHEC Program Director.
  • Oversee the integrity of all data input into TRACKER© and ensure the data is entered in TRACKER© by end users accurately and in a timely fashion, providing training and materials as needed.
  • Enhance existing and develop new strategic partnerships by providing evaluation, planning, and community engagement assistance to internal and external partners.
  • Develop the focus and write grants furthering the mission of the department including providing educational and outreach opportunities for health sciences students and improving community wellness.
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental policy, professional principles, and/or reporting requirements affecting areas of responsibility.
  • Assist ICRH Director with developing new policies around program evaluation and research as needed.


Qualifications :

  • PhD degree preferred in social and behavioral sciences, implementation science, psychology, public health, public administration, health administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • A minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience in program evaluation and/or research.
  • Ability to navigate complex online reporting tables and charts in order to be able to identify and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Ability to work without daily supervision, prioritize workload, follow projects through to completion, show considerable initiative, maintain the highest ethical behavior, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to collect and evaluate data for accuracy and meaning, draw valid conclusions and make recommendations for a plan of action.
  • Ability to present data in useful and meaningful ways for reports, upper level administration, research, publication and the general public.
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written, to prepare and present reports, grants, and manuscripts for publication.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data using quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact with all organizational levels and community partners.
  • Ability to take initiative to help with ongoing projects and establish new projects.
