Faculty Openings, School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences

The School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Morgan State University (MSU) has multiple openings to start in July or August 2021. The School offers nine undergraduate, four master's and two doctoral degrees. MSU is conveniently located in Baltimore, Maryland, less than an hour's drive from the majority of federal funding agencies and various high-tech industries, such as computer science, defense, pharmaceutical, medical and biotech industries.

MSU is a fast growing Historically Black College/University (HBCU) and a Carnegie classified doctoral research university with high research activity (R2). It has also been designated by the State of Maryland as Maryland's Preeminent Public Urban Research University. Under its strong and highly regarded leadership, MSU is planning to be among the nation's highest ranked research universities with an R1 Carnegie classification. The beautiful campus in northeast Baltimore is designated as a "National Treasure" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

1. ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH

The School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences invites qualified scholars to apply for the Associate Dean for Research position to start July 1, 2021. It is desirable that the applicant have accomplishments equivalent to the rank of full professor in one of the School's five academic departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics & Engineering Physics.

The Associate Dean for Research is expected to lead the research and scholarship endeavors of the School, guiding the processes of applying for and managing grants, developing and training of faculty in research and scholarship, establishing and nurturing relationships with funding agencies, and building partnerships for research and scholarship. The Associate Dean is also expected to actively pursue her/his own research and scholarship by maintaining a funded research laboratory and training graduate and undergraduate students.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished researcher with an outstanding scholarly publication record, a demonstrated and successful history of external funding, and experience supervising funded programs as a director or in other research administrative positions. The candidate should

be an outstanding teacher and scholar with the academic qualifications necessary to be appointed as a full professor.

2. PROGRAM DIRECTOR: MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE

The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program at Morgan State University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Program Director to start July 1, 2021. The MLS program is housed in the Biology Department of the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, where we offer nine BS, four MS, and two PhD programs.

Qualifications include an earned master's or doctoral degree, national certification-American Society for Clinical Pathology/National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (ASCP/NCA) as a generalist, and a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience with evidence of ability to teach at the university level. A knowledge of and maintenance of NAACLS continuing accreditation of the program is also required. Candidates with a doctoral degree in biological or health sciences-related fields will be evaluated for tenure-track assistant/associate professor or tenured associate professor appointment in the Department of Biology, depending on qualifications.

Primary responsibilities include: (1) Program administration, quality improvement, and evaluation; (2) Curriculum planning and development, student recruitment and advising; (3) Development and maintenance of clinical affiliations and partnerships; 4) Teaching of relevant courses. Additional responsibilities include research, scholarly activities and service.

3. TENURE-TRACK POSITIONS IN BIOLOGY/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (2)

Position Description: The Department of Biology invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to start in August 2021. We seek dynamic and energetic candidates with research and teaching strengths across a range of biological or environmental science subdisciplines. Candidates conducting research involving the application of data-intensive approaches to understand and address global challenges, such as human and environmental health and climate changes, are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates are expected to establish an extramurally funded research program addressing related Biological Sciences and Environmental Sciences issues and teach undergraduate courses in biology and doctoral courses in Bioenvironmental Science.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in biological and environmental sciences with at least one year of postdoctoral experience and a track record of peer-reviewed publications. Other preferred qualifications include:

1) success in obtaining extramural funding;

2) a record of teaching at the university level and/or mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; and

3) a commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching, research, and service.

4. TENURE-TRACK APPLIED MATHEMATICS OR STATISTICS POSITIONS (2)

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for two tenure-track positions at all levels, to start in August 2021. Applications are encouraged from scholars working in the fields of Applied Statistics and Data Science, Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computational Mathematics. Current research areas of interest include risk management and insurance, statistical learning, biostatistics, mathematics in machine learning algorithms, mathematics in high performance computing, mathematical and computational social justice and sciences, mathematical cryptography and cybersecurity, and mathematics in quantum computing and encryption. Other areas of interest include mathematical modeling in biology, bioinformatics, quantum physics, and transportation engineering, mathematics in bioinformatics algorithms, applied stochastic processes, and topological data analysis. Candidates in these areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates with outstanding research credentials in other areas may also apply.

All candidates must demonstrate a high level of scholarship and research accomplishments as well as evidence of outstanding teaching and student mentoring. The department offers graduate programs including the Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Computational Mathematics and the M.A. degree in Mathematics. The undergraduate programs offered are B.S. degrees in Actuarial Science and Mathematics. Currently, Morgan is the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the nation that offers the B.S. degree in Actuarial Science. The selected applicants are expected to contribute to the expanding department programs and interdisciplinary research projects in the School of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to working with culturally diverse faculty and student populations. Duties of the position include teaching courses in actuarial science, probability and statistics, and other standard undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses as well as mentoring and advising students in departmental programs.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences, or Actuarial Science preferably in industrial and/or computational mathematics, statistical learning, machine learning, big data and analytics, and mathematical modeling with a strong commitment to student mentoring, student-centered teaching, and an established record of multidisciplinary and extramurally-funded research experience; experience in college teaching, evidence of ongoing scholarly activity in the mentioned fields; years of experience requirement is dependent on the rank of the Professor.

Associate Professor 5-7 Years

Full Professor 8 + Years
