Job Description

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director is responsible for addressing the needs of students who are first-generation, income-eligible, and students with disabilities in accordance with US Department of Education Legislation & Regulations outlined in the 2020-2025 Student Support Services (SSS) Grant. The Assistant Director shares in the First-Generation Programs’ responsibility to promote and demonstrate our commitment to first-generation student success at Northern Arizona University. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of First-Generation Programs. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required. Continuation of position may assume availability of on-going grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads in the management of the Student Support Services (SSS) program. This includes participation in departmental and divisional strategic planning. Provides guidance and consistency in policy and procedure decisions within the program and the department to ensure compliance with the SSS grant and the success of participants.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate three (3) Student Development Coordinators, and other employees if needed. This includes ensuring professional development that will strengthen the SSS program as part of the First-Generation Programs department.
  • Provide indirect supervision for Graduate Assistants and Peer Mentors.
  • Provide direct service to a select number of program participants in alignment with program regulations, and university goals. Includes assessing and identifying student needs, coaching and mentoring, as well as applying interventions and strategies to aid in participant retention and graduation. Includes general advisement and counsel on personal, academic, career, and financial issues.
  • Analyze progress reports, identify current and potential areas to be addressed (i.e., study skills) and create policy to ensure participants are referred to appropriate campus resources.
  • Responsible for interacting and developing partnerships with other campus departments/ programs in order to attain program goals and objectives.
  • Help create, and coordinate program activities, trainings, and workshops, including academic, financial aid, financial literacy, and cultural events for First-Generation Programs and SSS.
  • Represent the department or work unit on various committees, work groups and employee forums.
  • Serve as a member of the department’s leadership team by participating in strategic planning, staffing decisions and other key topics.
  • Work with the Director to manage grant budgets: review and approve all expenditures of Program funds and operational budgets, meet with Business Support Services to validate accuracy of charges posted to grant accounts and forecast future expenditures.
  • Implement data stewardship and management in compliance with federal and university guidelines to ensure a program that meets all grant guidelines, monitor participant academic status and performance. Make programmatic decisions appropriately based on data, analytics, assessment with use of actionable outcomes.
  • May serve as acting director in the absence of department director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs/College Student Personnel, Counseling, or Higher Education AND three years of professional experience in a higher education institution; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science or related field AND six years of professional experience in a higher education institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working for a TRIO program, or working with TRIO in a formal capacity.
  • Budgetary experience with staffing, programmatic and operational expenses.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and philosophy.
  • Works in a team environment and displayed support of staff in developing relationships for long term growth and development of staff and department.
  • Developing collaborations and partnerships in order to further the mission of First–Generation Programs and Student Support Services.
  • Understanding and implementing successful programs that support first-generation students in higher education.
  • Has experience with scaling programmatic expansion to include more participants.
