General Summary/Purpose:

The Research Nurse will participate in studies of Multiple Sclerosis(MS) and related disorders. She/he will assist the principal investigators in the implementation of novel high-profile clinical trials for new methods to treat and to follow MS patients and related disorders. The successful applicant will be passionate about patient well-being, and improving the long-term trajectory for those patients through research and clinical care. While the nurse will work with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, research nurses, and research coordinators, applicants must be able to work and make decisions independently, and have good time management skills in order to work on several projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. The nurse should have management or supervisory skills if needed to provide oversight to study coordinators. Also, excellent organizational skills and data management are required, as well as flexibility and a willingness to help out members of the collaborative team, when such an occasion arises.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Screen potential participants for participation in trials and recruitment for studies through patient registries and relevant clinics
  • Ensure the informed consent process for studies, and coordinate participant enrollment and follow-up visits related to each respective study.
  • The research nurse will also help with the collection of study data and biospecimens, entering data into study database, as well as documenting and reporting adverse events.
  • He/She will assist with the management of protocol related health problems, and maintain communication with members of the research team in a confidential manner and in accordance with good clinical practice.

Other research responsibilities include: Maintaining research related documents and correspondence in a confidential manner, including informed consent forms and research data. Resolving queries and reviewing monitoring reports to identify and correct errors. Reporting protocol deviations and adverse events in a timely manner. Maintaining study inventory according to regulatory standards. Reviewing with PIs research accounts status. Working with Compliance committees and Institutional Review Boards. Interacting with research subjects by email, phone, and in-person in a professional manner. Meeting with the research team on a regular basis, and participating in troubleshooting and resolving issues for research studies.

The nurse's main professional development responsibilities will include: Assume responsibility for own professional development and remain current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education events or programs. Maintain current knowledge of all JHH, JHU, and clinic policies and procedures related to clinical operations, and assume responsibility for appropriate application, and compliance. Complete clinical nursing educational activities to grow/strengthen specialization in MS nursing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Successful completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Two (2) years of clinical or research nursing experience in neurologic diseases is desired; MS experience highly desired, but not necessary.

Special Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Ability to work well with families and patients/research subjects.
  • Documentation of completion of HIPAA and research subject protection education required.
  • Prior experience in study coordination is preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software and EPIC electronic medical record system preferred.
  • Management or supervisory skills a plus.
  • The candidate should have demonstrated management or supervisory experience should they need to provider oversight to study coordinators.
  • Research Nurse coordinates day-to day-tasks related to designing, implementing and/or completing clinical research projects.
  • Ensures the implementation of research protocols as well as ongoing administrative processes related to these studies; screen and enroll patients, and provide continued monitoring of these studies ensuring that all protocols are followed and status reporting, billing, and other regulatory components are performed correctly.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
