Job Summary

Under the direction of the grounds working foreman or designee, assist the waste truck driver in the collection of waste and any recyclable commodities campus-wide and safely operate college vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to snow removal activities, sanding and other departmental needs. Substitute for waste truck driver as necessary. Perform general labor duties as assigned.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Waste, Recycling Commodities and Compost Collection (80%)

• Assist waste truck driver in collection of waste and any recyclable commodities campus-wide on a regular schedule.
• Must possess ability to substitute for waste truck driver as necessary
• Must participate in snow removal operations during regularly scheduled work hours.
• Perform daily cleaning and weekly lubrication of the waste truck.
• Perform general laborers tasks including, but not limited to mowing lawns with power or hand mowers, trimming hedges, loading trucks, removing debris, demolishing walls, hand digging, raking leaves, snow removal with hand shovels and blowers.
• Observe OSHA safety regulations and practices at all times and participate in required safety programs.
• Read and comply with all department notices and attend meetings as required.
• Must demonstrate a strong knowledge of current state traffic and waste handling facility regulations.
• Responsible for cleaning vehicles, inspecting for damage and performing visual check prior to using. Reporting any issues discovered to the supervisor immediately.
• Maintain positive public relations with all members of the college community.

Other (20%)

• Provide back-up staffing as necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

• Must possess valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
• Must have a valid driver’s license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements and obtain DOT certificate. Upon award of this position, a Division of Motor Vehicles background check will be completed.
• Must be able to safely bend, lift, stoop, carry and move materials up to fifty pounds regularly and up to ninety pounds occasionally.
• Must be able to safely load and operate loaded hand trucks or dollies.
• Must be able to attain a hoist lift operator’s license, if requested.
• High school/vocational diploma, GED equivalent or combination of education and experience.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in accessing the internet, using the Smith College email, finance, payroll and calendar systems as well as the work order system.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Skills

• Ability to use good judgment to take appropriate, independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
• Must possess the ability to carry out oral and written (electronic) instructions.
• Must be capable of basic recordkeeping.
• Must possess ability to work in wide variety of conditions including, but not limited to extreme temperatures, loud noises, unpleasant odors, etc.
• Must be familiar with and have general knowledge of the operation of hydraulic equipment.
• Must be able to safely operate waste truck and all other department vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, riding mowers, lawn mowers, hand mowers, snow blowers, snow removal equipment, chainsaws, clippers, and hedge trimmers, demolishing walls, hand digging, hand tools and raking leaves with hand rakes, blowers and shall demonstrate ability as required.
• Must be able to safely lift and carry various types of furnishings, equipment and materials.
• Must be able to kneel, crouch and bend repetitively for extended periods.
• Must possess strong commitment to maintain high standard of maintenance.
• Must have knowledge of OSHA regulations for the safety of the college employees, its users and properties.
• Must demonstrate ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
• Must have a clear understanding of the union contract and all college policies.

Additional Information

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
