Job Summary

The Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory is encouraging applications for a Professional Research Assistant to assist with a variety of clinical and wetlab duties. This includes recruiting, screening, monitoring and testing research subjects, analyzing computer-recorded physiological data, collected biological samples, and file organization. Wetlab duties will include data collection and processing of blood samples for testing, as well as data entry. This position seeks a candidate with excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build excellent rapport with human research subjects. This position is expected to start during the spring semester, and will last through the end of the sponsored project on 11/30/2023.

Who We Are

The CU Boulder Department of Integrative Physiology was ranked sixth overall among Physiology units in the U.S. in the most recent (2010) National Research Council report on doctoral programs. The Department of Integrative Physiology is one of the top four departments in extramural funding in the Division of Natural Sciences and has the largest number of undergraduate student majors (~1800) on the CU Boulder campus. The Department has ~25 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 10 full-time instructors, and ~70 graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students. Faculty research and the undergraduate and graduate curriculums focus on physiological function from molecules and genes to human populations and public health.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Subject Recruitment
  • ensure timely and effective recruitment of human subjects for laboratory research projects (e.g., developing new recruitment resources, advertising, performing online and telephone screening, assess whether subjects meet inclusion/exclusion criteria, etc.).

Acquire Subject Informed Consent
  • thoroughly explain all experimental procedures to potential human subjects in lay terms.
  • have sufficient understanding of the laboratory research project to be able to answer subject questions.
  • acquire oral and written informed consent in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • assist with revision of informed consent documents and other regulatory documents as needed.

Schedule Experimental Testing Sessions
  • schedule subjects for check-in visits and testing sessions.
  • coordinate schedule with general research center and investigators.
  • make reminder calls and send reminder emails to subjects.

Screen, Monitor and Test Research Subjects
  • prepare ‘new’ subject folders; prepare equipment and supplies for scheduled procedures.
  • assist investigator with some laboratory procedures (e.g., exercise testing, DXA, blood pressure measurements, ultrasound imaging, etc.).
  • monitor subject compliance using online survey records.

Data Management and Subject Results
  • analysis of computer-recorded physiological data (e.g., ECG, BP waveforms, physical activity monitors, etc.).
  • assist with management of database (timely data entry into REDCap/spreadsheets, assure data are accurately recorded in files and in computer databases, compile data for interim and final study analyses)
  • management of collected biological samples (ensure samples were collected and stored appropriately, inventorying, compiling samples for later analyses as needed)
  • follow-up with collected biological samples sent to core laboratories
  • file organization; develop packets of subject results and send to subjects in a timely manner
  • complete paper work for subject payment and follow-up to ensure payment

Wetlab Duties:
  • Data Collection/Data Entry
  • Processing of blood samples for testing
  • Immunohistological Staining, Imaging and Analysis
  • Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell Isolation
  • Quantification of protein expression by ELISA, western blot…etc


What You Should Know

This position is part of a sponsored project, tied to funds that end on 11/23/2023. Extension may be possible based on the availability of additional NIH funding and performance, but is not guaranteed.

What We Can Offer

$37,000-$47,000 commensurate with skills and experience.

What We Require

Bachelor’s degree in a biologic science.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under strict time constraints.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience with clinical research (preferred) or other interaction with patients in a clinical setting.
