Butler University invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the English Department, beginning Fall 2021. We seek a candidate who specializes in new critical approaches to the Early Modern period, such as those that draw on critical race theory or gender studies. Willingness to teach Shakespeare preferred. Candidates should have a Ph.D. by the time appointment begins. The successful candidate will be committed to excellent undergraduate teaching and curricular innovation in a wide range of core curriculum and literature courses. We seek a willing collaborator with colleagues across disciplines and in our interdisciplinary majors in Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies, International Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and the African Studies minor. Candidates should have experience in and ability to contribute to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.

Teaching load is 3/3 and will typically include two core courses, two departmental service courses, and two upper-level English courses per year. Butler University is an urban campus in Indianapolis, under three hours drive from Chicago, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Butler University seeks faculty who are committed to providing high-quality engagement with students, high levels of academic challenge and support, and meaningful experiences that prepare students for life and leadership in a diverse, multicultural world. Butler University is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable environment for all employees. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Please send a cover letter, a CV, and a statement of teaching philosophy that speaks to how you address issues of diversity in the classroom to Dr. Ania Spyra, Search Committee Chair, at aspyra@butler.edu .

For full consideration, applications should be received by January 7, 2021. The position will remain open until filled.

Company

Butler University

With just over 5,000 students, we’re relatively small as far as universities go. That’s a good thing—it means classes are more personally engaging and professors are always available to help.

But in terms of opportunity, Butler University is about as big as it gets. Indianapolis is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Midwest. As residents, Butler students can plug right into the real-world through internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, public performances, and community partnerships. These experiences provide working knowledge and skills that students need to excel after college.

A career at Butler University means so much more than a job.  Join the dedicated, innovative, and supportive community of faculty and staff that is moving Butler Beyond.
