Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

As part of School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech) team and Application Services (AS) unit, the Business Intelligence Analyst position leverages data science, data engineering and data analytics to enable an audience of faculty, staff, students, leaders and other stakeholders to derive insights for data-driven decision making.

This position reports to the Senior Business Analyst and performs data acquisition and engineering to build Tableau/Power BI reports and dashboards, design data models, and interface with stakeholders across the enterprise for custom data visualizations and self-service APIs.

The Business Intelligence Analyst will support a broad portfolio of administrative, business intelligence, financial and educational systems for the School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and the VCU Health Science campus.
• Research, design, develop, and test reports and dashboards for stakeholders across all business units and functions.
• Distill complex data and relationships into clear, concise charts and visualizations.
• Implement key recommendations by identifying cross-functional stakeholders, developing requirements, ensuring accurate implementation, monitoring impact, and optimizing results.
• Design data models and ETL data pipelines from a variety of sources to extract data from operational databases and transform the data to easily understood business views.
• Gather and process raw data into a form suitable user ingestion.
• Work closely with developers and stakeholders to design data warehousing, advanced analytics and appropriate use of BI client tools and technical components within BI client tools, and business intelligence solutions.
● Train end users on dashboards, BI tool usage, features and functionality, maintain and ensure up-to-date instructional materials and documentation repository for faculty, staff and students.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Proven experience with the following:

● Microsoft Technology Stack (C#, ASP . MVC, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5/CSS3, SQL Server, SSRS, SSIS, Azure DevOps, Bootstrap, . NET /. NET Core).
● Developing Tableau and Microsoft Power BI dashboards and custom reporting.
● Developing Extract, Transform, Load ( ETL ) programs, data processing programs in a specific language for a specific platform.
● Scripting & Automation, Web Services APIs.
● Data integration, data modeling, data warehousing, and business intelligence concepts and technologies.
● Database design and the systems development life cycle ( SDLC ).
● Testing and quality assurance methodologies, automation, and tools.
● Strong systems analysis and design skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and conflicting priorities.
● Ability to listen and understand user needs and requirements.
● Highly motivated, reliable, detailed, and driven to produce high quality work.
● Ability to interpret and communicate information clearly and accurately, translate ideas and instructions both verbally and in writing.
● Superior presentation and communication (written and oral) skills; able to communicate complex concepts to a diverse audience of faculty, staff, students, leaders and other stakeholders.
● Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Preferred Hiring Standards

• Bachelors degree in business information systems, computer science, information technology or related field or equivalent education and experience is highly preferred.
• Experience in systems analysis, requirements gathering and specification documentation.
• Experience in technical writing, Q/A testing and systems training.
