Specialist - Fabricator

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
The fabricator designs, constructs, and installs a variety of items on campus, including but not limited to: cabinetry, carpeting, concrete, metal work and welding, doors, walls, ceilings, and roofs. Maintains, installs, and repairs equipment and systems and performs complex work in the design, fabrication, and repair of a variety of equipment, parts, tools, machines, and devices. Incumbents are able to analyze requests, devise a plan, and execute unique projects as requested.

Required Qualifications:
Graduated with a standard high school or the equivalent plus 4 years of experience related to key roles and responsibilities.

Valid driver’s license required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade.
  • Knowledge of equipment and systems specific to department.
  • Knowledge of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy, plastics, synthetic materials, and other materials used in machine work and welding.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, tools, and equipment.
  • Skilled in the design, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals piping, equipment, and structures.
  • Skilled in the installation, maintenance, and repair of systems and equipment specific to department.
  • Skilled in estimating time and material requirements for work projects.
  • Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Skilled in cutting, fitting, and welding or assembling various types of metals.
  • Skilled in the fabrication, modification, and repair of equipment and machines. Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to solve technical problems.
  • Ability to assess operational requirements and to plan and organize work flow patterns and schedules.
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions as well as blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate through various electronic methods, as well as create reports and documents electronically.
  • Ability to develop and maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.


Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years experience in woodwork, finishes, cabinetry, or a related field. 2+ years experience in welding and metal fabrication

Welding certificate is preferred


Physical Requirements:
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Considerable physical activity - heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
