Position Information

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

California State University Dominguez Hills seeks a transformative leader to serve as our next Director of Athletics. We are looking for a leader who: 1) understands how to leverage opportunities for growth and advancement at the university; 2) fosters high standards of integrity, athletic excellence, and student-athlete academic success; 3) has strong management and fiscal skills; 4) is able to develop excellent relationships with both internal and external constituents; and 5) hires, directs and supports coaches who are committed, not only to winning, but to the welfare of student-athletes.

The Director of Athletics reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and serves on the Vice President's leadership team. The Director administers the overall NCAA Division II Athletics program and provides strategic leadership, direction and oversight for all aspects of the program. Responsible for budgeting and financial management; staff and coach supervision, games administration. Serves as liaison with faculty, staff, students and others to coordinate and achieve departmental goals and ensuring compliance with all NCAA, CCAA, and Title IX rules and regulations.

The Director manages over 50 staff, 10 varsity sports programs, and activities that support over 200 student athletes. The Director also collaborates with Admissions and student success units on the recruitment, retention, and graduation of student athletes. The Director will work closely with University Communications and their public relations team on branding ideas and to promote games. The Director will be responsible for the coordination of athletics programs and facilities with the Dignity Health Sports Park.

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's degree with a preference of sports administration, business management, or public administration or related field

Required Experience: Five years of progressively responsible, related administration experience that includes leadership and direct supervision of employees, and managing complex budgets

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree and at least 5 years experience directing a successful intercollegiate athletic program

Substantial experience in sports program administration in higher education

Management of facilities, student services to support athlete success, NCAA compliance, and complex budgets

Acumen to gather, analyze, and use data to evaluate and maintain athletic program metrics

Superb written communication skills and the ability to speak persuasively to a variety of audiences

Proven expertise in external revenue generation, fundraising and marketing skills, and community relations

Direct experience working with, or supervision of, media relations

Certification: Valid Drivers License

Responsibilities

35% - Provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics program; maintains a program that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities; administers the overall athletic budget; recruits and manages the coaching staff; and ensures compliance with all university, CCAA and NCAA policies, rules and regulations.

25% - Provides leadership with sound decision-making with regard to all departmental matters; ensures that the Athletics Department has a highly competent and diverse coaching, administrative, and support staff consistent with the University's mission; annually evaluates all athletic team programs, coaches, and staff to effectively plan short and long term strategic goals.

15% - Works collaboratively with University Advancement to develop and implement plans for fundraising activities on behalf of the entire program and monitors the fundraising activities of individual coaches. Works collaboratively with Admissions, Financial Aid and the Registrar's Office to ensure that athletic scholarships are awarded properly and students are successfully matriculating. Strategically works with Associated Students Inc to ensure transparency and accountability for scholarships awarded by the student government.

15% - Oversees the recruitment, educational progress, and academic success of student athletes; sets the expectation for coaches and student athletes that performance in the classroom is the primary purpose of higher education and that pursuit of knowledge and earning a degree are the main goals; coordinates with Athletics Student Success Coordinator on the assessment and enrollment of student-athletes, as well as monitoring the ongoing academic eligibility and success.

10% - Formulate and lead an athletics advisory council that consists of faculty, staff, students (ASI and SAAC leaders), alumni and community members; participates in community events and activities; engages in the governance and leadership of the NCAA and the CCAA.
