Position Summary

Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA), a private Christian institution located in West Palm Beach, Florida, seeks an inspiring and strategic Assistant/Associate Professor of Communication with a special emphasis in Journalism. Preference will be given to those candidates who have field experience in Journalism. Teaching will include cross-disciplinary courses that bring together broad areas of communication and draw on both pedagogical and professional experience. Normal teaching load is four courses each semester. Additional responsibilities include advising, developing and delivering interdisciplinary courses, researching and publishing, mentoring and managing student publication. The entrepreneurial candidate will further enhance the excellence and vitality of the Department in accordance with the University mission. This program of study is currently located in the School of Communication & Media, however, Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Board of Trustees recently voted to merge the School of Music & Fine Arts and the School of Communication & Media to form the College of the Arts, effective August 2021. Programs of study in the College will now include Cinema, Communication, Dance, Digital Media, Gaming, Graphic Design, Journalism, Music, Preparatory Department, Public Relations, Sports Broadcasting, Theatre, and Visual Art. This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Applied Digital Media & Communication. Rank is commensurate with credentials and experience.

 

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in Communication with a concentration in Journalism or Corporate and Public Communication (Doctoral Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed by Summer 2022)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of journalism as an academic discipline and a practice
  • An active Christian faith

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of teaching experience at the university level
  • 3+ years field experience in journalism, as evidenced by a portfolio of recent work
  • Successful track record of online course development and instruction as measured by student and administration evaluations

 

Summary of Job Duties

  • Articulate and explore the relationship between press media and the civic good
  • Teach existing courses such as Foundations in Journalism, News Reporting, Introduction to Media, Persuasion, Civil Discourse and the Common Good and Sports Reporting
  • Teach courses that emphasize the fundamentals of multi-platform journalistic writing and reporting
  • Develop innovative coursework exploring the future of journalism and place within the study of Communication
  • Carry on a program of rigorous scholarship
  • Integrate Christian faith and pedagogy
  • Participate in University service and faculty development programs
