Purpose: A three professor cluster hire to join the faculty in the School of Agriculture in developing an innovative animal/poultry science teaching, research and outreach program at Tennessee Tech University. Tennessee Tech is a state supported institution with an annual enrollment of approximately 10,000 located in Cookeville, Tennessee, a micropolitan area of Middle Tennessee with a population of 35,629 and a population growth rate of over 2% annually. The School of Agriculture has 15 faculty members and an enrollment of approximately 300 students, with approximately one-third of those students enrolled in the Animal Science or Pre-Veterinary Science concentrations. Available resources include:

  • Tennessee Tech Shipley Farm, a 300-acre working, teaching and research farm located 3 miles from campus which includes:
    • $2,000,000 poultry research and teaching barn with laboratory facility to be completed before August, 2021
    • Approximately 80 head of Simmental and Sim-Angus cows, 50 Dorper Ewes, and a swine operation
  • Tech Oakley Farm, an 1800-acre farm located 20 miles from campus, consisting of:
    • 350 Angus and Angus cross cows
    • 8,000 square feet greenhouse space for vegetable production
  • Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion, a multipurpose facility, located on Shipley Farm
    • Operated as a teaching facility Monday through Friday
    • Host to a wide variety of agricultural and non-agricultural public events on weekends

FTE:                           3 positions

Essential Functions:

  • Two 9-month tenure-track or Lecturer positions with split appointments of teaching, research and outreach/service in animal science.
  • Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate/graduate courses in animal science and poultry science.
  • Mentor undergraduate students
  • One 12-month tenure-track position with split appointments of teaching, research and outreach/service in poultry science.
  • In addition to teaching responsibilities, tenure track faculty are expected to:
    • Procure grants, contracts, and other funding to support scholarly research in their respective areas of expertise.
    • Provide leadership and strategic planning to establish a statewide outreach program through collaborative relationships and education programs with state producer groups, University of Tennessee Cooperative Extension, Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Farm Bureau, USDA, other agencies and organizations.
    • Participate in the graduate program providing a Ph.D. in Environmental Science with a concentration in Agriculture.
    • Provide support and cooperation to respective producer programs in the surrounding counties and throughout the state.
  • Mentor students for competitive career placement within the livestock and poultry industries.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • D. Animal/Poultry Science or closely related field.
  • Ability to deliver courses via distance/online learning platforms as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of ability to conduct and collaborate in multiple disciplines related to the animal and poultry sciences.
  • Degrees in ruminant nutrition, animal physiology, or poultry science.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting applied research that addresses current needs in livestock industries.
  • Demonstrated evidence of ability to disseminate current scientific information in animal science to stakeholder groups in a manner that can be understood and applied to the industry
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with faculty, staff, students, alumni and stakeholders in poultry enterprises.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate experiential learning and provide effective academic and career advising to students.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation of program results.
  • Demonstrated skills in the ability to develop partnerships and collaborations.

Physical Demands: Those typical of any classroom-type environment or office environment.
