Job Summary:Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 28 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level, and four programs (men’s and women’s Alpine and Nordic Skiing) that compete at the Division I level. The department also hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby’s 2,000 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the department.

The College recently constructed a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex, which is among the best Division III facilities in the country. The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength & fitness center, athletic training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College has opened a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields that are also among the finest outdoor venues in Division III. The new 4000 square foot athletic training suite is equipped with three private exam rooms, ample rehabilitation space, twelve large treatment tables with extremity adjustments, six taping stations, two inground plunge tubs, and various new modalities.

The Colby College Department of Athletics seeks a certified athletic trainer starting in August. As a member of the Sports Medicine team, the athletic trainer provides first aid, injury mitigation, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and referral to injured student athletes; assists in the educational experience of athletic trainer student interns, and travels with athletic teams. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide primary medical services of assigned teams as deemed by supervisor
  • Evaluate and treat intercollegiate varsity and rugby sport student athletes
  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes
  • Serve as an effective role model for college-aged students
  • Provide on-site medical services of all in-season practices, home contests, and select away contests as assigned by supervisor
  • Ensure appropriate student athlete documentation in electronic medical records of all musculoskeletal injuries, cardiac, concussion, mental health, and general medical history.
  • Maintain a clean, healthy and safe treatment environment
  • Comply with all NCAA and NESCAC rules and regulations, including but not limited to; first-year student athletes with regards to provider exams, sickle cell documentation, and other required medical documentation.
  • Maintain the appropriate credentials, e.g. certification with the BOC, State of Maine licensure, advanced CPR for the professional rescuer, and stay informed of current trends within the profession
  • Arrive on time and remain for scheduled clinical hours
  • Collaborate effectively with all members of the sports medicine/PEAK performance team and other Department of Athletics’ team members, including but not limited to head and assistant coaches, other departments on campus, and off campus health care providers
  • Attend all staff PEAK Performance, assigned team performance, departmental, and college all staff meetings
  • Serve on various Athletic Department and Campus community committees/initiatives as deemed by supervisor
  • Demonstrate focused and respectful behavior during all staff and departmental meetings
  • Engage and commit to participation in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts

QU ALIFICATIONS :

  • Master’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Three to five years of previous experience preferred
  • Must be able to travel (on bus and plane) with teams as assigned
  • Ability to maintain current electronic medical records for patients is required
  • Eligible for State of Maine licensure
  • BOC certification and First Aid/CPR/AED certification for a professional rescuer is required
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor is preferred
  • NATA membership preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong positive communication and interpersonal skills with all levels
  • Ability to work well with colleagues in staff office setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to excel as a member of a diverse community


KEY RELATIONSHIPS :

This position reports to the head athletic trainer or assistant head athletic trainer, and interacts with team physician, senior associate athletics administrator, PEAK performance team, a diverse group of students, coaches, and staff.

General health, medical services and athletic facility environment. Equipment needed to perform duties includes computer, phone, copier, printer, and fax machine. Position involves frequent movement within a large athletic facility. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing stairs, hearing, seeing, public speaking, and sitting required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Travel, including the ability to ride on bus/plane is required.
