Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications seeks a data journalist to join our team as a tenure-track professor to teach students in the Broadcast and Digital Journalism and the Magazine, News & Digital Journalism departments.

This full-time position will support the Newhouse School’s goal of producing data-literate journalists who can write across media platforms. This hire will elevate the University’s national and international reputation in data journalism, further interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhance recruitment of outstanding students.

The successful candidate will use data to tell stories, including some of the following skills: web development languages such as HTML5 and CSS, data collection and scraping techniques and programs (including Excel), knowledge of web-based data visualization tools, programming languages such as R, and an understanding of web/internet architecture. The successful candidate must also have professional news writing experience

Compelling candidates will indicate enthusiasm and promise for exemplary teaching, whether through prior teaching experience or similar professional roles mentoring/supervising young journalists.

The successful candidate will need to show potential for conducting academic scholarship or industry-related creative activity that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess curiosity and the ability to learn new technologies as they keep up with the dynamism of the ever-changing industry. The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential to engage ambitious undergraduate and graduate and program students in one of the preeminent journalism schools in the country.

Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all journalism majors: foundations of data and digital journalism and cross-media news writing. Some training will be provided, but faculty members are expected to be independent, engaged learners.

Responsibilities

In addition to an academic year teaching load, the successful candidate must pursue a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School. Some financial support of these activities, such as membership in professional organizations and conference attendance, is available.

This faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students, school and university committee service, curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry outreach.

About the Broadcast and Digital Journalism Department

The Broadcast and Digital Journalism Department ( BDJ ) at the Newhouse School is regarded as one of the top training grounds for broadcast journalists. Newhouse BDJ alumni are employed at all levels of electronic journalism organizations around the world.

BDJ alumni help provide students with an employment pipeline into the professional world. The department has a close working relationship with a number of news organizations. For example, Nexstar Broadcasting Group is a partner with our Graduate Capstone experience in Washington, DC. BDJ students produce stories in our nation’s capital tailored for individual Nexstar stations around the country.

BDJ also partners with the New York State Associated Press Association to sponsor a biennial “State of the Field” workshop for media professionals and students. Newhouse BDJ students have done very well in national competitions over the years.
