This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 70% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), and 30% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Entomology & Nematology Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Duties will include developing a premiere apiculture education program. The successful candidate is expected to develop a robust certificate program under the entomology major and focused on apiculture. Primary responsibilities include teaching existing distance-delivered courses related to apiculture (ENY 4573/6572 – offered every semester, ENY 4574/6575 – offered every spring semester and ENY 4932/6934 – offered every fall semester) as well as traditional classroom courses (ENY 2041C – offered every summer B semester, ENY 2890 – offered every spring semester). Further, the successful candidate will teach the department’s Insect Toxicology course (ENY 6651C) as well as develop additional related courses, both traditional (classroom) and distance. The successful candidate is expected to use innovative course design strategies in the development of the certificate program.

The successful candidate will also be expected to develop a productive research program with an emphasis on honey bee toxicology and management of honey bee pests and diseases. The candidate will be expected to address issues of importance to stakeholders in Florida and beyond and to broader collaborative efforts related to apiculture. Further, the candidate will actively seek research funding, chair and serve on graduate committees, supervise undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publish results with students, participate in curriculum revision and enhancement, and engage in other professional development activities related to teaching and advising.

Tenure will accrue in the Entomology and Nematology Department. The faculty member will participate actively in undergraduate education and graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in their program area.

The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Background Information

The Entomology and Nematology Department is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) and has a diverse teaching, research and extension education programs with 32 faculty members on the Gainesville campus, 35 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, 50 courtesy faculty, and 30 support personnel.

Required:

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Entomology or a closely related discipline is required. Teaching experience in apiculture and bee biology. Research experience in testing and development of chemicals used in managing bee pests and parasites. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred:

Postdoctoral experience is desirable. Pedagogical expertise in delivering distance education courses and certificate programs.
