The Center for the Study of Tobacco Products at VCU seeks a part-time Research Nurse (up to 29 hours/week) to work in our clinical laboratory, where we conduct research studies with healthy adult participants.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff from VCU, American University of Beirut, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, as well as several other U.S. and international universities and organizations to focus on an issue of immediate concern to public health — the regulation of tobacco products.

The research nurse will perform a variety of medical duties: (1) insert venous catheters and perform blood draws, (2) process and freeze blood samples, (3) oversee participant safety and prevent illness/injury, (4) manage and complete research related documentation, and (4) communicate with the medical monitor as needed.

The research nurse will also manage environmental hazards/biohazards and lab safety and ensure that the laboratory complies with biohazard handling, waste, and staff training in this area to assure safety. The research nurse will also ensure that all medical supplies are in stock and ordered via fiscal staff as needed and ensure that all medical equipment is in working order and help to arrange for repairs as needed.

Applicants for this position should (1) demonstrate a mastery of clinical skills and be able to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population, (2) be able to assist the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort, and (3) recognize changes in participant situations and intervene appropriately.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited RN nursing program with current RN license

• Minimum 6 months of experience

• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty and staff

Preferred Qualifications

• More than 2 years of experience
