The Department of Population Health, Division of Global Health is seeking a strong Clinical Team Leader for our inaugural Academic Model Providing Access to Health Care (AMPATH) global health partnership program in Puebla, Mexico. The Clinical Team Leader will primarily be based in Puebla, Mexico, with additional clinical time in Austin, Texas, based on applicant interest and experience. This will be a faculty level position at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, with a visiting / adjunct faculty appointment at the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla Facultad de Medicina (BUAP).

While medical education has been part of the clinical landscape of Austin Texas since the mid-1970s, the Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 students in June of 2016. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School will pursue innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has already been made to enable its development and success.

The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) is a global network of academic health centers (AHCs) collaborating with ministries of health in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) to ensure essential health care for all. AMPATH's partnership model has unleashed the inherent power of academic medical centers to support public-sector health care delivery systems to improve population health. In the case of AMPATH-Kenya, it is an alliance between Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Moi University and the AMPATH Consortium, a network of North American universities and academic health centers led by Indiana University. The AMPATH Consortium aims to foster long-term, equitable partnerships with AHCs and universities across the globe and the AMPATH principles represent a replicable and adaptable academic global health partnership model.

Replicating AMPATH furthers the consortium's vision of a global network of academic health centers collaborating with ministries of health in low and middle-income countries to ensure essential health care for all. The goals of replicating AMPATH will be aligned with AMPATH's mission for university and academic health centers to partner in the delivery of health services to build health systems in the public sector that:

• strengthen and develop sustainable health care services

  The Division of Global Health within the Department of Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School works to leverage the trifold academic mission of service, education, and research to improve health outcomes and promote health equity for poor and vulnerable populations globally. The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School aims to be the first in the world to replicate the AMPATH model and plans to do so with the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla School of Medicine (BUAP) in Mexico, in partnership with Mexico's Secretaria de Salud (Ministry of Health). Through this AMPATH replication effort, we aim to improve population health and transform primary health care delivery in Mexico, Texas, and across the globe.
  
  JOB SUMMARY
  
  The Clinical Team Leader will work with the Chief of the Division of Global Health, the Director of Education and Research in the Division of Global Health, Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP) leadership and faculty, and Mexican Secretaria de Salud health care delivery partners to primarily advance the care/service delivery mission of the AMPATH-Mexico program, but also to contribute to AMPATH's tripartite mission of care, education and research. This includes implementing community-based health programs, delivering clinical care, teaching and mentoring, providing faculty support and education to any UT Austin trainees in Mexico, and in general providing overall program development, administration and operational support on the ground in Mexico. Critical to this role is the leadership skills necessary to develop strong working relationships with our Mexican partners. This is a unique position within the global health space for those interested in pursuing initiatives in partnership with Mexican colleagues that aim to reduce health care inequities faced by people in rural, Puebla, Mexico and in low- and middle-income countries more broadly.
  
  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  

• Develop and maintain mutually beneficial institutional and personal relationships with our Mexican academic, government, and community partners as it relates to the clinical, learning, and research environments, necessary to build the AMPATH-Mexico program and advance our mission;

• Provide overall program administration and operational support on the ground in Mexico;
• In coordination with BUAP and health care delivery partners, advance the care/service delivery mission of the AMPATH Mexico program;
• In collaboration with BUAP and local partners, as well as with UT Austin faculty, create, implement, and evaluate community-based health programs in Puebla, Mexico;
• Provide faculty support and education to any UT Austin trainees (undergraduate or graduate) in Puebla, Mexico;
• In collaboration with the Director of Research and Education, oversee the development and implementation didactic and clinical education training programs, for both UT Austin and AMPATH Consortium learners, as well as BUAP learners and other local workforce in Mexico; this may include including development and evaluation of the educational curriculum, delivery of educational programming, and overall ensuring their alignment with the mission of the AMPATH-Mexico program as well as with respective institutional (i.e., UT and BUAP) standards;
• In collaboration with the Director of Research and Education, facilitate UT Austin and other AMPATH Consortium partners engagement in collaborative research with BUAP faculty as part of the AMPATH-Mexico program;
• Maintain clinical skills by providing culturally-competent and inclusive direct patient care and clinical education and mentorship to BUAP and UT Austin trainees;
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to faculty and residents in scholarship, teaching and service as it relates to their engagement in the AMPATH-Mexico program.

Qualifications

• Native fluency in both verbal and written Spanish and English, inclusive of both professional and conversational Spanish;
• MD or DO degree required; an additional MPH or other graduate degree in public health / global health, health care administration, business, or medical science preferred;
• Board-certified or Board-eligible (BC/BE) in a relevant medical specialty, primary care preferred. Preference will be given to those who have completed Graduate Medical Education in an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Med-Peds Residency program;
• Eligible for a faculty appointment at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School with rank appropriate with the candidate's experience;
• Eligibility for Texas Medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment; Texas Medical Board certification required;
• International experience working in Mexico or Spanish-speaking Latin America, and/or another underserved, under-resourced region of the world;
• Strong ability to organize and conduct clinical and administrative activities in an international setting;
• Exceptional ability to communicate in-person and across multiple digital and other written platforms;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with multiple sectors and levels, in diverse international settings;
• Ability to collaborate effectively with administration, staff, peers and other faculty at multiple levels, and from diverse communities and cultures;
• Ability to collect and manage data to track performance outcomes;
• Strong collaboration, team building, and conflict resolution skills;
• Passion for and commitment to undergraduate and graduate medical education for purposes of optimizing patient outcomes, particularly vulnerable and marginalized patient populations;
• A growth mindset, with demonstrated flexibility and adaptability;
• Commitment to social justice and health equity.
