Organizational Unit Overview
The purpose of the Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research is to provide staff support to the Chancellor and other university offices for university-wide planning and institutional research activities. Primary planning responsibilities include the coordination of strategic planning, budget planning, and space planning. Primary institutional research responsibilities include development, management, and repository resources for official University statistics including enrollments; human, physical and financial resources; and degree programs. The Office also has primary responsibility for administering institutionally based surveys, General Administration surveys, and other university-wide administrative evaluations.

Job Duties
The Statistician reports to the Director of Institutional Research and assumes responsibility for assignments that support the planning, assessment, and research functions in the Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research (IPAR). The scope of the position extends from IPAR to the entire University community. The overall duties of this position entail the management and presentation of detailed qualitative and quantitative data that support the informed decision-making needs of the university community.

Under this general job function, the position specifically is responsible for the following:

  • The selection and use of appropriate statistical methods (and statistical software such as SAS or R) for quantitative analyses, including ANOVA, MANOVA, regression, discriminant analyses; decision trees; time-series analyses; smoothing techniques, etc.;
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and advanced data visualizations (dashboards) related to statistical analyses and institutional data;
  • Independently planning and conducting research projects using university data that address issues and questions related to higher education in general and ECU in particular;
  • Responding to ad-hoc requests for information related to institutional research, including the creation and revision of programming queries to extract records from databases;
  • Conducting workshops and professional development sessions for faculty, staff, and/or students in support of data analysis and visualization;
  • Promoting best practices in institutional research, data use, and data visualization through teaching activities including but not limited to classroom instruction and advising student research; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

The person in this position will use their statistics skillset to support the institutional research and advanced analytics functions within IPAR. They will serve as the primary analyst for current and historical data and execute strategic, innovative data-driven analyses that provide valuable insight for the university. This person will also need a strong consultative skillset, able to develop productive professional relationships with other campus units, seeking to understand their current set of processes and needs, and use this knowledge to proactively identify opportunities for collaboration, automation, advanced analytics, and project development. They will be involved in the management of statistical projects from start to finish including data gathering, data processing/cleaning, data analysis, statistical modeling, results analyzing and presentation. They should be able to present data and information in visually appealing and easily understandable ways.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in statistics or a related field from an accredited institution; OR a master’s degree AND a combination of coursework, training, and work experience in quantitative research
  • Experience conducting the following types of statistical analyses: ANOVA, MANOVA, regression, smoothing techniques, discriminate analyses, and decision trees
  • Statistical analysis expertise and experience using statistical analysis software packages such as SAS or R
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences and explain technical information in a clear and understandable manner

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Experience creating data visualizations using tools such as Tableau or Power BI
  • At least three years’ job-related experience conducting statistical analyses
  • Experience with teaching, training, or conducting workshops in higher education settings
  • Knowledge of relational database concepts and programming (e.g., SQL language)
