The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Humanities Collegiate Division of the University of Chicago invite applications for a one-year, renewable, benefits-eligible appointment as Assistant Instructional Professor in modern Arabic. Start date of the appointment will be September 1, 2021.

Responsibilities include both teaching and administrative duties. Teaching consists of six courses in Arabic language across the three quarters of the academic year at all levels of the language; Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Arabic and potentially in a colloquial Arabic. Administrative duties may include assistance with student placement, programmatic assessment, coordination of the Arabic Language Circle, Conversation Table, or other program-specific duties. The Assistant Instructional Professor is expected to engage in regular professional development activities.

A Master’s degree in Arabic or Middle Eastern Studies or a related field with a focus on Arab culture or Arabic language is required.  A minimum of one year experience teaching modern Arabic at the college or post-secondary level is required.  Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for teaching modern Arabic in a university context, e.g. through an ACTFL-certified result at the Superior level or higher, or through receipt of an advanced degree earned in Arabic or Middle Eastern Studies or a related field an Arabic-language context.   Specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment is highly desirable.
