General Summary/Purpose:

The Sr. Research Specialist II will manage the daily laboratory operations for the Deep Sequencing & Microarray Core Facility. The individual will make intellectual contribution in specialized scientific lab utilizing ultracentrifuges, LSR II flow cytometer, scintillation counter and other equipment.

The individual in the role should be able to work within and support a culture of safety. This position requires attention to detail, sound communication/interpersonal skills (oral and written), as well as commitment to customer service both internal and external. Responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research, staffing, equipment and space. Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets and core billing. Extensive knowledge of research and how laboratory organization satisfies research goals and objectives.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the core.
  • Utilize highly specialized knowledge to operate sophisticated instruments (NextGen sequencers, PacBio Single Molecular sequencer, Oxford Nanopore Sequencer, Micro Scanners, NCounter Analysis System, Covaris E220, ultracentrifuges, LSR II flow cytometer, scintillation counter and other equipment) and interpret results.
  • Participate in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to the core. This includes:
  • NextGen Sequencing, for compiling library constructions,Illumina HiSeq, NextSeq andMiSeq NextGensequencing platform; and for various applications: mRNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Single Read, Paired-End Read, Mate-pair, Targeted Resequencing usingSure-Select Technology,Microbiome 16S rRNA sequencing, and barcode multiplexing.
  • Affymetrix microarray services for analysis and hybridization.
  • Nanostring nCounter Analysisfor multiplexed gene expression, miRNA expression, and copy number variation analysis.
  • DNA, Chromotin, and RNA shearingof DNA, chromatin, or RNA to size distributions less than 1.5 kb.
  • Provide statistical and bioinformatic data analysis on primary data and downstream functional analyses.
  • Identify and select best options for experimental design, data collection, and interpretation based on literature review, technical training, advanced knowledge/understanding of activity, and collaboration with customers.
  • Troubleshoot, applying specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions.
  • Train lab personnel on complex scientific models, supervise other laboratory personnel’s scientific experiments, and data analysis.
  • Perform routine operational activities, including but not limited to, acquisition of supplies and equipment, inventory review, equipment maintenance to ensure the laboratory remains operational.
  • Refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Advise investigators on experimental design and research methods.
  • Assist PIs with making decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction.
  • Monitor equipment and supply budgets, authorize and execution of purchases.
  • Maintain computer hardware and software in the core and assist with computer problems.
  • Responsible for compliance and safety audit preparation of core for regulatory reviews.
  • Train core personnel in the use of shared equipment such as ultracentrifuges, LSR II flow cytometer, scintillation counter and other equipment.
  • Manage core billings through ILabs software. Prepare and provide data usage reports for core.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required
  • 6 years related experience in a laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
