Malcolm X College is seeking a Director for our Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The Director- Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is responsible for the administration of Malcolm X College’s Center for Teaching and Learning, leading efforts to develop a professional development program with a focus on instructional practices, and designed to ensure faculty are equipped with the requisite tools and resources to more effectively impact student learning, course success and retention. The Director-CTL also implements plans for sustaining and continually improving the Center’s programming, working with key staff in identifying professional development priorities guided by the college’s strategic plan, mission, and vision.
Malcolm X College is committed to improving teacher effectiveness and promoting equitable access to effective teachers. The college is creating a CTL that strives to improve the retention of effective teachers through activities such as creating or enhancing opportunities for teachers’ professional growth; delivering professional development that is relevant, effective and outcome oriented; and advocating for institutional improvements to create opportunities for successful teaching and learning. The CTLsupports faculty in the effective and intentional use of teaching and learning tools, including but not limited to digital technologies, and it seeks to advance faculty understanding of how students learn and how best to optimize student engagement.
- Establishes and Chairs a Center for Teaching and Learning Advisory Board.
- Engages the college in the scholarship of teaching and learning through the generation of initiatives grounded in research and theory that improve instruction.
- Works collaboratively with key stakeholders to plan, develop, and implement faculty development programming in support of best practices, ensuring appropriate alignment with the pedagogical goals of the college.
- Promotes an institutional culture of equity-focused, high-quality instruction and service deeply rooted in continuous improvement.
- Facilitates the delivery of robust professional development programming that supports the efforts of faculty to become more informed, creative, and reflective practitioners.
- Identifies and sources appropriate talent for outsourced training providers for specialized training programs, seminars and workshops as needed.
- Works with key faculty to develop a Math and Science Institute (MSI) program to serve as a training academy for college math and science faculty and Chicago Public School partners.
- Implements plans to provide training and development to enhance faculties’ knowledge of how to effectively teach math and science, as well as other core competencies to include: understanding and addressing multiple learning styles; mapping student learning outcomes to assessment strategies; and invoking multiple pedagogical strategies.
- Promotes the utilization of faculty members with expertise in specific teaching strategies (e.g. active learning) as resources in support of peer training and the application of new learning strategies in the classroom.
- Coordinates with Information Technology (IT) Services to train staff in the use of online tools that support quality instruction.
- Coordinates, develops, organizes and delivers workshops and
professional development seminars, including but not limited to:
- Evidence-based faculty professional development targeted at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels;
- Instructional coaching for programs and departments suited to their disciplinary needs;
- Incoming faculty orientation sessions - providing instituional and instructional informaiton to adjunct and full-time faculty;
- Develops and manages a faculty Mentor Program to allow for consistent sharing of cross-disciplinary instructional expertise.
- Monitors faculty level of participation in CTL’s programming. Ensures equity in access to and opportunity for participating in learning in areas to include: teaching efficacy, instructional technology, course design, curriculum management, learning environments and classroom management.
- Reviews faculties’ self-identification of personal and professional growth needs and assesses CTL efforts in meeting training needs. Advocates for additional support and resources to meet address gaps in training and development.
- Maintains a high standard for data management. Reviews assessment and evaluation of data generated by Math and Science Institute and training and development activities to assess CTL success in meeting goals and objectives.
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Education, Higher Education, Curriculum & Pedagogy, or related field. A degree in Instructional Design/Technology strongly preferred
- A track record of contributing to learning production-oriented environment embedded in an institution of higher education
- At least five years of experience designing and producing online and hybrid course connect as an instructional or multi-media designer preferred.
- Professional experience implementation team and executive leadership simultaneously preferred
- At least three years of experience as an outstanding teacher, with a strong background in pedagogy and/or leadership of higher education
- Experience with Brightspace D2L Learning Management System or similar LMS, highly desirable
- Experience in using, teaching, and monitoring evidence-based instructional practices
- Experience in planning and delivering professional development workshops and training to faculty
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint)
- Some proficiency with educational technology such as a variety of LMS and active learning platforms desirable
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization
