Title to be based upon experience, the College of Law Executive Director / Assistant Dean for Career Development serves as a leader at the College, and will provide innovative and comprehensive career placement assistance for current students and alumni. Leading a team of professionals, the Executive Director / Assistant Dean will model creativity and leadership, forming and building relationships with students and a wide variety of employers. This person will cultivate and maintain an expansive nationwide network of high-quality externship and employment placements in a variety of settings, including private legal practice, public interest legal services, business and industry, and government. The Executive Director / Assistant Dean will develop and implement relevant programming for students.


• Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. or other advanced degree preferred.

• Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in law-firm based legal recruiting, law school career services, emerging legal services employment, etc.

• This role will require the skills to help students think about and pursue legal careers of the future.

Job Specific Qualifications

• The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of leadership, effective communication, and the ability to develop and apply innovative solutions.

• The Executive Director / Assistant Dean must be familiar with legal, business, technological, cultural, and marketplace influences impacting legal hiring.

• This person will need a broad knowledge of court systems, law firm hiring, and the ability to cultivate a strong network of contacts in law firms, businesses, government agencies, the judiciary, emerging technologies, public interest groups, and other prospective employers.

This role will be central to developing a nationwide network of prospective placements and employers. Travel will be required throughout the United States to meet with employers, develop externship placement sites, and network with alumni.


Develop high-quality career opportunities for Law students:
• Manage the process of securing successful employment for the vast majority of College of Law students
• Lead the effort to increase the number of high-quality employers interviewing SU Law students
• Market the College and SU Law students to a wide range of private and public sector employers
• Track trends and respond to changes in the legal marketplace, work with students on innovative job search strategies

Oversee robust externship program:
• Supervise and promote the College’s externship program as means of developing meaningful work experience for students that strengthens their professional résumés and leads to employment upon graduation
• Coordinate student-facing programs among other College departments to provide rich and innovative programming
• Connect students with alumni and other potential mentors
- Track individual career and experiential search progress
• In partnership with College marketing and communications team, develop and produce a library of high-quality virtual career resources for students

Lead responsive Career Development department:
• Oversee collection of data on a variety of student employment variables, create reports to guide the efforts of the department
• Continually improve the student and alumni programs and services offered, obtain feedback from students and interviewing employers, identify targeted areas for improvement
• Ensure timely and accurate compilation and submission of reports, including ABA, NALP, and University initiatives
• Provide mentoring and development of department professionals, maintaining a culture of professionalism, productivity, innovation, and collaboration

Career Development department marketing and communications:
• Research industry trends and implement appropriate means of student engagement
• Ensure timely and effective communications, which could include social media, publications, website, etc.
