Role Summary

The Department of Chemistry seeks to make an appointment of Professorship (any rank) in Analytic Chemistry.

The role holder will be a member of the College of Science (COS). They will be a recognized authority in the field of chemistry, developing and maintaining a high-profile external profile and will become a leading member of a dynamic, cutting edge research culture, having access to the excellent research facilities which UAEU offers. They will have a vital role to play in the development and achievement of COS within the context of the strategic goals of UAEU, leading research and scholarship in your field.

They will be expected to lead on advanced, internationally excellent research in analytical chemistry, securing high impact research funding, to teach and to supervise at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to contribute to admissions, examining and assessment, and to contribute fully to academic administration in both the Department and the College.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will make a full contribution to the academic life of the University through research, teaching and academic service. They are expected to have extensive teaching experience, together with a significant publication record, proven research experience and to have demonstrated academic leadership and an ability to lead and manage effectively. There is considerable flexibility in the organization of duties and faculty workload planning is undertaken as part of ongoing staff review with the Department Chair in order to ensure appropriate time and opportunity to undertake all duties as well as for professional development. The broad balance of duties for Professors (at all levels) includes Teaching, Supervision and Examining (40%), Research (40%) and to contribute to the overall development of the College and Departmental profile as a world-leading provider of analytical chemistry education, training and research of the highest academic standard (20%).

The College and Department

The Department of Chemistry is housed in a state-of-the -art facility offering undergraduate through to doctoral programs, with accreditations from the Canadian Society for Chemistry and the Royal Society for Chemistry. There are 22 full-time faculty members in the Department, with research interests covering a broad spectrum of topics from quantum mechanics to materials and environmental chemistry. Much of the research carried out in the Department of Chemistry is aimed to address the needs of the UAE in areas such as health, environment and energy. Many modern instruments are available for use by the faculty and students including spectroscopic, chromatographic and electrochemical instruments. The College of Science is one of the oldest Colleges in the University and remains a cornerstone of scientific education and research supporting the economic and technological development of the country. In addition to modern technology supporting teaching and learning and excellent departmental laboratories, the College boasts special purpose facilities such as the Nano-Physics Research Laboratory, Genomic Analysis and Microbial Studies Laboratory, Central Analytical Laboratory, Inorganic Geochemistry Laboratory, Geophysics and Seismic Laboratory, and the Museum of Living Resources and Geological Museum.

The University offers a competitive compensation package for faculty with a starting annual salary commensurate with experience. In exceptional cases, appointments advertised for posts at Assistant Professor level may be made to Associate Professor. There is the opportunity for promotion in post through the annual review and promotion system.

Education & qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD in Chemistry or Analytics and additional qualifications in teaching and learning or other professional skills relevant to a faculty role. Other evidence of working in Analytical Chemistry as well as the ability to engage in international-quality research, with publications and other participation in research activities commensurate with stage of career.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed remotely. Final round interviews may be held on campus and candidates may be asked to submit a more detailed research proposal and/or give a short presentation as part of the interview process.
