Job Details
Visiting Assistant Professor of Digital and Computational
Studies
The Bates College Digital and Computational Studies [DCS] Program
invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor
with a focus on Computer Science, beginning August 2021. Candidates
with demonstrated success in teaching and/or supporting
marginalized, first generation and historically underrepresented
students are especially encouraged to apply. DCS is a new program
that seeks to build bridges between computation and digital
studies, and the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural
sciences, and other existing interdisciplinary programs on campus.
The DCS curriculum asks students to interrogate the practices,
values, cultures and assumptions of the digital world, while
engaging with computing for social good. For more information about
Digital and Computational Studies at Bates, see our webpage
(http://www.bates.edu/digital-computational-studies/).
Candidate Credentials. Candidates should have completed their Ph.D.
in Computer Science by August 1st, 2021. They should be prepared to
teach introductory Computer Science courses (e.g. DCS 109) and
develop subsequent courses based on their area(s) of expertise. We
especially encourage applications from candidates interested in
interdisciplinary research, teaching and mentoring undergraduates;
experience teaching programming to students having a range of prior
experience (including none); and/or evidence of supporting a
diversity of students in computer science, STEM, the digital
humanities, or other areas.
Resources at Bates. In 2018, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
awarded Bates an Inclusive Excellence grant to transform the STEM
culture at Bates. Areas of focus include updating the ways that
faculty approach their work with students, expanding existing
programs for student mentoring and leadership, and redefining the
first-year science curriculum to introduce research experiences.
Also in 2018, Bates was awarded a five-year grant from the Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation in support of the humanities and humanistic
social sciences. The Mellon grant is funding strategies to create a
21st-century curriculum, support the faculty’s capacity to more
effectively teach and mentor a diverse student population, and
remove barriers to academic success particularly experienced by
students from marginalized groups. In addition to these sources of
support, Bates houses both the Digital Media Studio, which provide
equipment and expertise for a wide range of audio and visual media,
and a Visualization Lab, which includes Extended Reality studios
and 3D printing. Bates DCS faculty are also prepared to support
candidates as they develop courses designed for an
interdisciplinary program.
Bates College is situated in Lewiston, a diverse and growing city
in Maine, two and a half hours north of Boston and 45 minutes from
a burgeoning Portland technology start-up scene. The standard
teaching load at Bates is 5 courses per academic year (either 2-3
or 2-2-1). In addition to an active interdisciplinary program
culture, funds for scholarly work are available to all faculty.
Bates is a highly selective liberal arts college and will provide
an excellent climate for professional development and
scholarship.
Review of applications begins on March 29, 2021, and will continue
until the position is filled.
Applicants should submit all requested materials through
Interfolio.
Applications should include the following:
● A cover letter stating your qualifications, both scholarly and
pedagogical, for this position as well as your interest in teaching
at a small liberal arts college such as Bates College.
● A statement speaking to how your teaching, scholarship and/or
service might contribute to equity, inclusion and antiracism in the
campus community.
● A current C.V.
After candidates have been selected for an initial
video-conference, they will be asked to submit letters of
reference. Those not selected at this time will be notified.
Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background
check.

When Bates opened in 1855, it was New England’s first co-ed college. Since then, we have admitted students no matter their nationality, race, religion, sex, or socio-economic status. While this openness was at the core of our founding identity and principles, it has been tested throughout time and requires us to constantly reflect upon and recommit to our mission.
