Coastal Carolina University, Department of Theatre, seeks a tenure track Assistant Professor in Theatre in the area of Lighting Design.

The Department of Theatre at Coastal Carolina University, accredited by NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre), invites applications for a full-time position of Assistant / Associate Professor in Lighting Design. This is a 9-month, tenure track appointment to begin August, 2021. The Department offers a B.F.A. degree in Theatre Arts with concentrations in Musical Theatre, Acting, Physical Theatre, and Design & Production, as well as a B.A. degree in Theatre. Located in Conway, South Carolina, just 9 miles from Myrtle Beach, this highly collaborative and rigorous department maintains a 4-5 production mainstage season, in addition to new works and staged readings in our Maymester series to connect students with working professionals. Department faculty maintain professional careers in their respective disciplines and assist students in seeking summer employment. Senior B.F.A. performance students participate in a New York Showcase for industry professionals and Physical Theatre students spend a year abroad in Italy. Coastal Carolina University offers many other study-abroad opportunities for students and faculty.

We seek an ambitious, energetic, and quality driven teacher-scholar to join one of the nation’s top undergraduate Theatre programs, serving over 170 majors. This faculty member will serve as Lighting Designer for the department and teach a variety of related design and production courses at all levels. M.F.A. or equivalent professional experience required. University teaching experience is required. Additional qualifications in one or more design and production areas (Sound, Props, Media /Projections) highly desired. Professional experience strongly preferred.

The Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars whose creative production, teaching, and community engagement focus on the culture, history, and artistic expression of the African Diaspora Community in the United States. We seek teacher-scholars who will serve as mentors for our diverse student body and who have a demonstrated commitment to underrepresented and underserved communities as well as the academic success of all our students. Preference for this position will be given to applicants who can contribute teaching, curriculum development, and creative work in the areas of African American Theatre and Performance.

While the academic home for the candidates will be in the Department of Theatre, we are especially interested in hiring new faculty members who pursue their own creative practice within the interdisciplinary framework of African Diaspora Studies. We seek candidates who can be appointed as Affiliate Faculty in our Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and who will contribute to the growth of such programs as the existing Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies and to future academic programs in Africana Studies, African American fine and performing arts, advocacy, and leadership.
