Work type: Staff-Full Time
Department: L&S/CTR FOR LIMNOLOGY
Location: Madison
Categories: Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Research, Scientific

Position Summary:

The dynamics of water quality in lakes are a combination of internal processes and external inputs from the watershed, both of which are being modified by anthropogenic forces. This position will support research and public outreach efforts aimed at understanding the drivers and consequences of environmental change in lakes, which is necessary for protecting and managing these important ecosystems in Wisconsin and globally.

[1] Field and laboratory research: assist in implementing research aimed at understanding the dynamic links between lakes and their surrounding landscapes. This will include leading a team to collect and analyze samples for water chemistry (e.g., nutrient concentrations and dissolved gases) and biological communities (i.e., plankton and benthic organisms) in lakes, deploying and maintaining environmental sensors, and assisting with whole-lake manipulations to test hypotheses related to ecosystem resilience.

[2] Public outreach: the incumbent will assist in implementing a public outreach initiative - The Master Limnologist Program - which will provide training in aquatic ecosystem management to local water stewards, empowering their communities to make informed, data-driven decisions about lake and watershed management.

[3] Overall support of research program: The projects supporting this position are multi-investigator and multi-institutional. The incumbent will support the research program by organizing data, responding to communications from the public and agency partners, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and generally contributing to the team effort. Effective collaboration and communication abilities are essential. In addition, the position will support the general research activities of the supervisor including organizing and running the laboratory and working with students.
