Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The College of Humanities and Sciences invites applicants to apply for the position of Research Nurse and Lab Manager. For all human research studies assigned, the Research Nurse/Lab Supervisor (RN/LS) is responsible for supervising and managing human research studies in a compliant and efficient manner. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the RN/LS will collaborate with all members of the research team to ensure all federal, state, university, and protocol requirements are followed, institutional research objectives are met, and that ethical obligations are kept. The RN/LS is responsible for supervising staff and managing human research studies in a compliant and efficient manner.

Key responsibilities include:

•The RN/LS will guide human research participants through experimental protocols, insert venous catheters and perform blood draws, process and freeze blood samples, oversee participant safety, and manage and complete research-related documentation.

•The RN/LS must understand and adhere to all IRB requirements, Human Subjects protection regulations, and all aspects of IRB approved protocols.

•They will supervise staff (research assistants and study coordinators), assist with hiring and training, manage time reporting and annual performance reviews for direct reports. They will help support graduate student research activities, and facilitate day to day laboratory functions including annual equipment service and submit supply order requests.

•The RN/LS will also communicate with the medical monitor as needed.

•The RN/LS will ensure that the laboratory complies with biohazard handling, waste disposal, safety, and staff training related to these areas.

Employee acknowledges that this is a restricted position and understands that the continuation of this position depends on the continuation of funding.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•General knowledge of nursing theory and practice and ability to apply nursing techniques and principles.
•Requires analytical skills to resolve problems using basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
•Strong interpersonal skills used to communicate effectively with study participants, medical monitor, faculty, students, and staff.
•Ability to manage others/strong management skills.
•Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse faculty, staff, student, and visitor environment.
•Knowledge of how to properly handle biohazards such as human blood, urine, and saliva.
•Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required for entry into position:- Certification: RN in Virginia.
•Progressive experience in general medical/surgical/research nursing.
•Ability to use required equipment.
•Attention to detail, experience with the industry, and/or NIH -sponsored research protocols.
•Good computer skills (MSWord and MS Excel).
•Ability to learn to use new equipment as needed as well as state-of-the-art, custom-made software, and hardware to measure tobacco product puff topography including calibration and maintenance – Learn to conduct experimental sessions with tobacco product users.

Preferred Hiring Standards

•Experience with NIH - and industry-sponsored research protocols preferred.
