Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion & Organizational Development, Librarian II or III
The Michigan State University Libraries invite adventurous candidates who embrace experimentation and growth to apply for our new position, the Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion & Organizational Development. After a successful 2019 strategic planning process, this position was created to lead the Libraries’ efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This position also plays a vital role in several other key strategic directions: to increase the Libraries’ visibility and presence at MSU and nationally through engaging and meaningful promotion and communications, and to foster organizational vitality by providing robust training and career development for our staff.
The Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion & Organizational Development reports directly to the Dean of Libraries and is a member of the Libraries’ Executive Committee. The incumbent will have programming, budgetary, supervisory and unit oversight, as well as a faculty appointment. This individual will join an active community of diversity, equity and inclusion practitioners across the university who work collaboratively and in partnership with MSU’s Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer and the institution’s Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives.
Areas of specific responsibility include:
- Engage library staff and the university community in the creation, iteration and implementation of a diversity and inclusion-specific strategic plan including actions, performance metrics, monitoring, assessment and accountability considerations.
- Coordinate the Libraries’ Residency Program.
- Serve as supportive guide and liaison to the Libraries’ Diversity Advisory Committee which is responsible for public-facing diversity education.
- Provide oversight of the Libraries’ nationally recognized Accessibility unit.
- Supervise the Faculty Excellence Advocate in their role supporting faculty and staff from underrepresented groups and training an effective group of Affirmative Action Advocates to serve on search committees.
- Supervise the Head of Organizational Development in the creation and implementation of educational opportunities for all staff. The Coordinator of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Education reports to the Head of Organizational Development and is responsible for staff diversity education.
- Supervise the Outreach and Engagement unit which creates fun, supportive, and inclusive educational events for MSU students.
- Supervise the library Communications unit. This unit informs students, faculty, and alumni through print and social media communications.
- Supervise the User Experience unit in fostering service excellence through evidence-based evaluation and providing an outstanding library web presence.
MSU librarians are appointed as regular faculty in a continuing appointment system and are engaged in professional development, scholarly, and creative activities related to their position. Additionally, librarians serve in professional associations, library, and university committees as elected or assigned. Other duties as assigned.

- Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
- Significant and sustained leadership experience in a large academic library.
- Demonstrated expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and proven success in advancing diversity goals.
- Ability to be strategic, visionary, transformative and tactical while paying close attention to delivering tangible results.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and ownership.
- Project management and problem-solving skills, ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
- History of collaborative leadership with proven ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders to build consensus.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- An understanding of the major issues and trends facing large research libraries.
