Description 

The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology. The candidate will join a department that offers undergraduate and master’s degree programs with a focus on preparing and developing educators to provide equitable educational experiences for diverse student populations. The department is committed to removing inequities that face underserved and marginalized populations and encourage applicants with a similar social justice focus. Academic responsibilities include teaching and developing undergraduate educator preparation and/or graduate courses; assisting in the development of undergraduate and graduate programs; providing departmental, college, and university service; and maintaining a research agenda.

 

This position requires an earned doctorate in educational psychology or a strongly related field with a focus on assessment and a state issued teaching certificate are required. Doctoral candidates who are nearing completion are also encouraged to apply. University level teaching experience in educational psychology or closely related courses is preferred and at least three years of public-school teaching experience required. All candidates must have demonstrated ability and/or interest in teaching in a multi-ethnic, multilingual, multicultural environment.

 

The current teaching load for this position is 4/3 with a 3/3 load in the first year on the tenure track. Teaching in multiple modalities, day and evening, at any of UHD’s three campuses, and a commitment to excellence in teaching, including the ability to model exemplary methods for working with diverse populations of learners is required. The ideal candidate has the ability to use instructional technology for teaching and learning, and willingness to collaborate with university colleagues, as well as school district, and community partners through service activities. The position requires that the candidate establish a successful program of research and engage in research and service activities that support the department, college and the university.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate at the time of initial appointment, in Educational Psychology or a strongly related field (accompanied by a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Educational Psychology)
  • Knowledge of current sociocultural theories of educational approaches to learning and development
  • At least three (3) years of full-time experience as a K-12 classroom teacher in a public school setting
  • Experience or capacity to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds and advance the department’s mission of equity and excellence
  • Evidence of successful or potential for success in research/scholarly creative involvement, including but not limited to publications and grants

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background or expertise in one or more of the following human service-related areas: gifted and talented education; K-12 or adult teaching experience; school counseling; human growth and development
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and research related to urban education
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting
  • Active research agenda, with flexibility in area of expertise
  • Expertise and/or scholarly interest in topics related to diversity and social justice
