This postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Erika Szymanski on an NSF CAREER project: “Investigating how discourse tools conceptualize rules of microbial life.” The researcher will be responsible for collaborating with Dr. Szymanski on computational (topic modeling) and qualitative discourse analyses of recent microbiome literature, qualitative surveys of and interviews with microbiome researchers, and publications resulting from that research. They will be expected to publish work for academic audiences, to contribute to co-authored publications, and to participate in team meetings with researchers on related projects. The researcher will have funds available for conference attendance and support to pursue their own professional development. Teaching opportunities will be available on the basis of the researcher’s experience and interests.

Required Job Qualifications       

  • Doctoral degree completed by July 2021. Applicants must have the degree by date of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Organizational and time management skills

Preferred Job Qualifications      

  • Training in science and technology studies (STS), rhetoric of science, or a related field
  • Experience with topic modeling or other computational discourse analyses
  • Experience with qualitative discourse analysis, including ability (or willingness and aptitude to learn) to interpret scientific literature related to microbiome research and microbial biotechnologies
  • Experience with interview methods and/or other collaborative work with scientists
  • Research interests in multispecies studies or related areas of inquiry
