The Department of Physics at Smith College invites applications for a 3-year, benefits eligible position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2021. Applications should be passionate about research-based inclusive teaching and able to offer research opportunities for undergraduates on topics accessible to and of clear interest to first year physics students.

This fixed term position is open to applicants from a wide variety of career path, including teaching positions, research postdocs, government research labs, and private industry who seek a career-development opportunity to strengthen their teaching and research credentials. A Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related interdisciplinary field is expected by the time of appointment.

In their first year, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching one section of our collaboratively taught active-learning-based introductory physics course each semester. This successful candidate will teach this course which features an integrated lab, discussion, and small-group problem-solving format designed to support all learners and increase student retention in collaboration with experienced members of our department and student learning assistants trained in physics pedagogy. In their second year the successful candidate will again teach one section of introductory physics, one section of a collaboratively taught multi-section course on intermediate-level mathematical methods in physics and engineering, and an advanced undergraduate physics course of their own choosing from our standard offerings. Courses taught in the third and final year will depend on the needs of the instructor and the department.

In furtherance of the successful candidate’s research responsibilities, substantial departmental research equipment funds, a well-equipped and staffed center for design and fabrication, and dedicated lab space are available; collaborative use of existing faculty research lab equipment is also possible. The successful candidate may also apply for research funds for students and is eligible for faculty development funds, mentoring programs for teaching and research, and, post-COVID, research and conference travel funds.
