This postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Erika Szymanski and a team of four other researchers on a UK Economic and Social Research Council and NSF co-funded project, “Future Organisms: Synthetic Genomics and Responsible Innovation in the UK, the USA, and Japan.” The researcher will be responsible for conducting document analyses (in English) of synthetic genomics literature, including peer-reviewed scientific articles and other sources. They will conduct interviews and multi-sited ethnographic work with scientists, social scientists, and policy-makers involved in the American synthetic genomics community, and will assist in organizing an interdisciplinary workshop with scientists, artists, and social scientists. They will be expected to publish work for academic audiences, to contribute to co-authored publications, and to participate in team meetings. The researcher may travel to the UK and/or Japan for workshops and will have funds available for conference attendance. Teaching opportunities will be available on the basis of the researcher’s experience and interests.

Required Job Qualifications       

  • Doctoral degree completed by July 2021. Applicants must have the degree by date of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multinational, multidisciplinary team
  • Organizational and time management skills

 Preferred Job Qualifications      

  • Training in science and technology studies (STS) or a related field
  • Experience with interview and ethnographic methods
  • Experience with document analysis, including ability (or willingness and aptitude to learn) to interpret scientific literature in genomics and biotechnology
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary groups including scientists and artists
  • Research interests in multispecies studies or related areas of inquiry
