Northwestern University

Associate Vice President for Budget and Planning

Evanston, IL

Northwestern University (Northwestern), one of the world’s leading private research universities, seeks a seasoned and innovative leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President for Budget and Planning (AVP). The AVP manages the comprehensive budget model for the university and assists in the management of the budget planning and allocation process for the university’s operating budget of $2.5 billion.

Building on the university’s current solid financial foundation, the new AVP will provide an opportunity for fresh perspective and renewed vigor. Reporting to Northwestern’s Senior Vice President for Business and Finance, the AVP is responsible for leading all aspects of the university’s financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes. The AVP will work in close partnership with the Office of the Provost and other academic and administrative leaders to ensure that budget and supporting processes support the university’s mission and priorities. The AVP will translate budgetary and financial complexity into clear presentations to a wide range of individuals and units across the university and lead a talented Budget and Planning staff to ensure that the office provides a high level of service as trusted partners within the Northwestern community.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced budget administrator with at least ten years of increasingly responsible contributions to financial management. The AVP will be a hands-on problem solver and manager who has developed, implemented, and improved a robust budget process and bring experience establishing and maintaining analytical financial tools. The AVP must be an effective communicator with the ability and desire to connect and engage with others at all levels of the institution and be a proactive partner to colleagues on campus. The individual will model and encourage a culture of openness and transparency in decision-making and information dissemination around important budgetary matters facing the university.
