Purpose of Position:

The Director of Campus Operations serves as a key resource and advises leadership on a broad range of student, faculty, staff, and executive service matters at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

In support of SAIS objectives, this role leads and oversees facilities, IT services, student support, events management, parking, cafeteria, shuttle services, space planning, mail delivery, building maintenance and serves as the alternate Incident Commander and works and coordinates closely with head of security.

The operations team serves as an initial face of the school for prospective and current students and visitors in Washington, DC, and the Director leads the culture of client-centric service. This role also represents SAIS at the JHU level, serving on advisement committees regarding campus operations.

This leadership role provides strategic consultation to Divisional Business Officer and other leadership direction on a complex range of student and faculty service matters.

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Leadership including command and control of facilities and operational situations that arise, requiring the ability to quickly assess a situation, and lead resources to address it
  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills that enable incumbent to interact effectively with all levels including senior leadership, adult learners, current and prospective students, full-time and part-time faculty and the general public
  • Strong problem solving and analysis skills to address a wide variety of situations
  • Ability to gather, analyze, report and make recommendations based on campus center enrollment, staffing projections, and other data
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong working knowledge and experience with purchasing and operating budgets
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to coach, counsel, develop and supervise staff and contract staff at a variety of levels, from management to porter/facilities staff
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population and sensitivity to issues to ensure effective multi-cultural communication
  • High degree of comfort with technology and professionalism when using electronic communication methods.
  • Strong working knowledge of all SAIS divisions and programs preferred; ability to quickly learn
  • Strong working knowledge of admissions, registration, student accounts, and graduation procedures
  • Strong working knowledge of electronic systems and databases including MS Office; SAP, and SIS knowledge preferred
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Highly attentive to detail

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 7 years of experience providing facilities and operations supervision/leadership required; specific experience in an academic environment preferred
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency statement.

Internal and External Contacts:

  • Internal: Dean’s office, Faculty, Student Services, and various other staff
  • External: JHU Security, DC Security, JHU Facilities and Real Estate, vendors and contractors

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as second in command to the Sr. Associate Dean of Finance and Administration in his/her absence for issues surrounding SAIS operations.
  • Develops policies and procedures for facilities, security, incident command, IT services and planning student support, events, parking, cafeteria, shuttles services, gift shop, space planning and building maintenance in conjunction with program managers/directors.
  • Directs the operations, facility management, cafeteria, IT, and events management teams including numerous contractor staff personnel supporting facilities and manage all related projects.
  • Serves in a leadership role for crisis management incidents for Washington, DC campus along with the head of security and the senior associate dean of finance and administration. Provides expertise on crowd control, medical emergencies, and every type of campus evacuation or safety risk mitigation scenario.
  • Responsible for strategic direction of services and operations for DC Campus.
  • Directs facilities operations and oversight of facilities usage and space planning.
  • Provides strategic consultation to Sr. Associate Dean of Finance and Operations and other leadership on a complex range of student and faculty service matters and supervises overall facility response to inquiries and requests
  • Serves as an advisor to the senior associate dean for finance and operations and head of campus security on security related matters
  • Negotiates contracts with vendors, services representatives and contractors to ensure competitive rates and positive ROI
  • Oversees department budget; responsible for approval of charges to the department budget; reconciles monthly budget reports, and annual budget projections. Responsible for producing financial reports and providing financial analyses to leadership. Provides forecasts for budgeting and strategic planning in support of School’s fiscal year budgets.
  • In collaboration with senior leadership, define and measure financial goals for operations activities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule required, including routinely working early evening hours and occasionally working later evening and weekend hours when necessary.
  • Reviews, evaluates, set priorities, and determines responsibility for all day to day activities listed above.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
