Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is to foster excellence in mathematical research and to offer a strong undergraduate and graduate education that will prepare our students for stimulating and rewarding employment, career, and life-long learning opportunities. In addition, we strive to help all VCU students achieve a level of quantitative literacy and analytical skills enabling them to deal effectively with the quantitative issues that they will encounter throughout their lives.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

These two (2) hires serve to support the teaching of the large population of VCU undergraduates who need introductory mathematics courses for their major, and also to support the teaching of mid-level mathematics courses needed by engineering, science, and mathematics majors.

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching a full load of courses each semester of undergraduate mathematics or the equivalent. Future responsibilities may include leadership and coordination in a lower-level mathematics course and committee service to the department in exchange for appropriate teaching hours. Candidates with teaching interests in all areas of mathematics will be considered but preference will be given to those with interests or experience teaching college algebra, pre-calculus, and differential and integral calculus.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in Mathematical Sciences, Education, or related field. A successful candidate must have demonstrated the ability and appreciation of working with diverse faculty, staff, and student environments and must exhibit a commitment to fostering diversity as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Mathematics or a related field.
