The Class Dean works closely with the Dean for Academic Advancement and other class deans to foster student success and excellence. Class deans are responsible for a comprehensive program of academic advising and class management in a residential liberal arts environment. This includes helping students make progress toward their educational goals and graduation requirements, working with faculty to support student success in the classroom, facilitating access to academic and non-academic support services, and supporting student transitions from high school through the undergraduate years to life post-Wesleyan.
Class deans advise the Dean for Academic Advancement and Vice President for Student Affairs in the development and implementation of academic and student life policies, and represent Student Affairs on various University committees.
CLASS MANAGEMENT AND ACADEMIC ADVISING
Monitoring students’ academic progress toward the degree, including academic review
Academic advising, including interpreting and implementing academic regulations
Working with faculty to resolve student academic issues and providing general personal counseling and crisis management
Connecting students to appropriate academic and non-academic support services and collaborating with other offices to promote student academic success
Facilitating and supporting programs that address student transitional challenges
Developing informational materials for students, faculty and parents
Supervising administrative assistants of the office of the class deans
Other data management/data analytics responsibilities as assigned
Participate in divisional administrative “on-call” rotation
Serve as a resource person for students, parents, and other University personnel & facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments
Assist with development and implementation of major initiatives
Represent Student Affairs on designated committees as assigned
Perform other duties necessary to the basic function of the position, supporting the mission of the University and contributing to the programs and services offered by Student Affairs.
Master’s degree with at least 5 years’ administrative or teaching or advising experience at a post-secondary level or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, organizational, and project management skills
Demonstrated competence working with a diverse student population
Experience with creation of data and metrics that can be used for process improvement.
Demonstrated experience working with faculty to advocate on student issues
Demonstrated experience supporting student transitions and challenges
Proven leadership effectiveness, including the ability to relate and engage with all segments of campus
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
Doctorate degree with direct experience with academic advising
Experience in a residential liberal arts environment
Experience working at college or university strongly preferred
