About the Opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Director, the Disability Specialist is responsible for the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of appropriate services for students with disabilities with a focus on maintaining cutting-edge student-centered services.
SPECIFIC DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to): Provide disability-related support services and specialized advising to ensure equitable student participation in the University. Assist current and prospective students and their families through the process of acquiring appropriate documentation and registering for services. Coordinate, in conjunction with the Service Coordinator, and Note taking Coordinator, academic adjustments/accommodations and support services. Provide advocacy, education and consultation and negotiation with faculty, administrators, and other members of the University community with regard to students with disabilities. Determine individualized accommodations based on individual student needs, University and DRC policy and procedures, in compliance with applicable law. Determine eligibility and coordinate access to accommodations and services for postsecondary students, primarily who have psychological disabilities and students on the spectrum. Review psychological-educational evaluations, Neuro-psych exams, psychological evaluations, medical and other technical documentation to verify disabilities, eligibility for services in DRC and determine reasonable mandated accommodations. Develop plans to support access to courses, programs, facilities, services and activities on campus. Advocate to increase awareness and support of the campus community. Provide ongoing information and support for prospective and enrolled students. Provide ongoing consultation and technical assistance to faculty and staff to facilitate equal access, learning and other opportunities. Document and maintain case records; develop and present training on disability accommodations and assistive technology for faculty, staff, and student employees and the community. Maintain knowledge of current disability issues and legislation.
Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, Educational Psychology or related field or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Minimum two years' experience working with students in post-secondary education providing advocacy and support services within a college setting. Experience working with: evaluating disability documentation, including psycho educational, psychological and medical evaluations; specialized knowledge to interpret and assess medical and technical evaluations and determine disability accommodations and appropriate support services; developing and presenting in-service training. Demonstrated knowledge of: computer and assistive technologies; disability practices and procedures including applicable federal and state laws, policies, regulations and standards (e.g., Section 504 and the ADAAA); principles, concepts, methods and techniques of universal design; standards, requirements and regulations regarding confidentiality of information. Working knowledge of ADAAA and regulations and ability to explain them and the implications for students with disabilities; excellent group process and communication skills; excellent problem-solving skills to resolve academic accommodation and/or disability management skills; excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
