The Counseling Center (CC) at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a Staff Psychologist. The Staff Psychologist is a 12-month continuing position that provides short-term individual, group and crisis counseling, after-hours coverage, consultation services and outreach programming, and training and supervision of graduate students and doctoral interns. This position will involve the coordination of Group Counseling and Treatment Programs at the Counseling Center. Responsibilities associated with this role include:

 

  • Establishing and maintaining an awareness of the professional literature regarding group counseling and working to incorporate this information into the standards and practices of the Group Counseling Program.
  • Establishing and maintaining uniform standards for CC staff to utilize in conducting their groups. The standards are consistent with APA and AGPA ethical and professional guidelines, particularly in regards to written information available to clients.
  • Marketing Group Counseling and Treatment Programs both within the Center and in the campus community.
  • Serving as facilitator of improvements for Group Counseling and Treatment Programs, including discussion of groups during staffing and evaluating with staff members the strengths and weaknesses of specific groups and Group Counseling and Treatment Programs in general.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology and be licensed (preferred) or license eligible as a licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Preference for the candidate to be licensed within the Commonwealth of VA within one year.
  • Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting, including group counseling experience.
  • Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to multicultural competency.
  • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple complex clinical situations.
  • A collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect and trust towards colleagues.
  • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
  • Interest and/or experience collaborating with other departments on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
