Northeastern University-Charlotte

Northeastern University is a top-40 research university built on a tradition of innovation and engagement with the world. Northeastern integrates professional work experiences known as co-ops, research, service, and global experiences on every continent. The University has 22,000 undergraduate and nearly 17,000 graduate students enrolled and received $182.6 million in external research awards in 2019-2020.

In continuing to invest in its global campus network and the future of education, and under the leadership of current President, Joseph E. Aoun, Northeastern has developed a network of ten regional campuses. Each network campus is led by a Regional Dean and CEO who collaborates with the leadership of Northeastern’s Colleges, Schools, and Institutes in leveraging the faculty and expertise of the University to develop responsive and dynamic programming. The campuses in turn serve as sources of programmatic development and innovation, informing and enriching the network and University.

As the first of the network campuses, Northeastern University–Charlotte has grown its portfolio of degree offerings threefold since launching in 2011. During the summer of 2020, University leaders identified the untapped potential that the Charlotte healthcare sector creates for professionally oriented degree and non-degree programs. In response, Northeastern’s Charlotte campus will pursue the opportunity to further engage the growing healthcare industry in the region and to respond to the regional need for health professionals.

Dean and CEO, Northeastern University–Charlotte

Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for the Global Network, the Dean and CEO of the Northeastern University–Charlotte campus provides strategic direction and vision for the programs, services, and operation of the campus. Working closely with the University’s leadership in Boston, this Regional Dean identifies and develops opportunities to leverage the University’s offerings in response to the needs of the community with innovative degrees, professional development programs, and research projects.

Focusing on the needs and opportunities created through the healthcare industry, the Regional Dean and CEO will work with business and civic leaders, peer educational organizations, healthcare providers, and government and regulatory entities in developing programming and degree offerings.

The Regional Dean and CEO will develop responsive, dynamic, inclusive, and innovative educational opportunities with indicators of success that are ambitious and measurable in terms of enrollment, budget, and programmatic differentiation. They will be able to communicate their vision and plan confidently and through various mediums, while being responsive to diverse audiences.

The Regional Dean and CEO will provide exceptional leadership for staff in Charlotte directing both direct reports and highly matrixed staff resources. They will provide strategic direction in building a high-impact and diverse team with an emphasis on leveraging the strengths, resources, and relationships of the entire University. They will enjoy a natural cohort of peers in the leaders of the other regional campuses and will work collaboratively in building the strengths of the network and of each campus within it.

Qualifications

The Regional CEO and Dean will have a strong leadership profile with experience managing and building diverse and inclusive teams and developing innovative, equitable, and dynamic programs. They will demonstrate an ability to be decisive, move quickly, and take risks while building collaborative relationships in a highly matrixed organization.

The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to Northeastern’s educational mission, to innovation, and to facilitating the growth of their team. They will have exceptional communication and presentation skills, facility directing complex projects, and extensive experience managing budgets, establishing and meeting goals and deliverables, and growing a dynamic program or business.

Building on the campus’ focus on healthcare, the successful candidate will understand the needs of the rapidly expanding healthcare industry and will be visionary in framing the opportunities presented by the Charlotte campus. It is preferred that the successful candidate has direct working experience in the healthcare industry and/or related educational programming. The successful candidate will appreciate both the need to innovate and the need to attend to administrative considerations such as program licensing, and will have the breadth of experience and skill to be able to manage these priorities.

Northeastern University has a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. Successful candidates will have a demonstrable history in promoting diversity and creating a culture of inclusion through organizations, institutions, and/or groups they have been affiliated with.  They will also show a capacity for effectively promoting these values across the university in the role as Regional Dean and CEO.
