Description:
- A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the
Coastal Ecosystem Processes lab (https://www.harteresearchinstitute.org/research/coastal-ecosystem-processes)
at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. The
postdoctoral researcher will conduct research under the auspices of
a new grant that will facilitate implementation of a harmful algal
bloom monitoring program in Matagorda Bay and San Antonio Bay
(Texas) using high frequency water sampling and an automated,
real-time HAB sensor (Imaging FlowCytobot). The postdoctoral
researcher will gain experience in project management, project
development, mentoring (of undergraduate/graduate students) and
stakeholder engagement. Opportunities also exist for comparative
analysis of phytoplankton dynamics between estuarine systems that
vary in e.g., freshwater inflow, nutrient loadings, etc.
Responsibilities:
- Assume a leadership role in the implementation and operation of
a HAB monitoring program in Matagorda/San Antonio Bay
ecosystems.
- Analyze and publish data from the Matagorda/San Antonio Bay HAB
program.
- Collaborate with other members of the lab group, and mentor
undergraduate/early career graduate students in the lab.
- Develop and seek funding for new avenues of research related to
the goals of the Coastal Ecosystem Processes group.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present research results at public meetings and
national/international meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in Marine Science or related field.
- Experience with phytoplankton identification, preferably
including marine taxa.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including
experience communicating scientific findings to a broad
audience.
- Desire to work with a broad spectrum of collaborators,
managers, and stakeholders.
- Experience with project management and ability to meet project
goals in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with common programming software such as
Matlab.
