Job Description

Description:
  • A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Coastal Ecosystem Processes lab (https://www.harteresearchinstitute.org/research/coastal-ecosystem-processes) at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research under the auspices of a new grant that will facilitate implementation of a harmful algal bloom monitoring program in Matagorda Bay and San Antonio Bay (Texas) using high frequency water sampling and an automated, real-time HAB sensor (Imaging FlowCytobot). The postdoctoral researcher will gain experience in project management, project development, mentoring (of undergraduate/graduate students) and stakeholder engagement. Opportunities also exist for comparative analysis of phytoplankton dynamics between estuarine systems that vary in e.g., freshwater inflow, nutrient loadings, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Assume a leadership role in the implementation and operation of a HAB monitoring program in Matagorda/San Antonio Bay ecosystems.
  • Analyze and publish data from the Matagorda/San Antonio Bay HAB program.
  • Collaborate with other members of the lab group, and mentor undergraduate/early career graduate students in the lab.
  • Develop and seek funding for new avenues of research related to the goals of the Coastal Ecosystem Processes group.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research results at public meetings and national/international meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Marine Science or related field.
  • Experience with phytoplankton identification, preferably including marine taxa.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience communicating scientific findings to a broad audience.
  • Desire to work with a broad spectrum of collaborators, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Experience with project management and ability to meet project goals in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with common programming software such as Matlab.

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution's verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution's procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
