The Controller will provide vision and leadership for general accounting and related functions and activities at UWM. The Controller will work closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business and Financial Services (AVC- BFS), senior university leadership, and other divisional leaders to develop and implement effective strategies that respond to and support UWM’s mission. Major responsibilities, include:

• Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with current GASB and GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Ensures sources and uses of funds are properly classified throughout the enterprise

• Represents campus leadership on accounting related matters with UW System, and other state and federal entities. Researches and addresses complex accounting issues by recommending policy and procedures

• Provides leadership with staff throughout the organization; creates and promotes a positive, supportive, and inclusive work environment

• Manages and ensures key reconciliations are in place and completed in a timely manner to ensure accuracy and safety of UWM financial assets and resources

• Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the operations of the accounting functions, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives

• Identifies new technology and leverages existing enterprise financial systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of financial staff and reporting platforms

• Partners with the AVC-BFS and Director of Financial Planning and Analysis to monitor financial progress and changes and to keep senior leadership abreast of UWM’s financial position by providing accurate and comprehensive financial information

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
• 5+ years of functional and management experience in progressively more responsible financial and accounting positions
• Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team of financial professionals

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance and/or a CPA License
• Demonstrated experience successfully leading financial teams through key initiatives
• Experience with complex enterprise financial management and reporting systems (e.g., general ledger, purchasing, accounts payable, asset management, student information system modules, etc.)
• Professional accounting experience in large institutions with expenditures more than $100M
• Professional accounting experience in higher education
