General Summary/Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or Medical Director or Principal Investigator or designee, performs a variety of both routine and complex laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. This individual will perform a variety of technical procedures on clinical and research specimens in the histology laboratory.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for performing the day-to-day technical procedures on clinical and research specimens including the following activities:

  • Prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
  • Accessions specimens.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and databases (OpenSpecimen).
  • Isolates DNA from FFPE specimens.
  • Performs immunohistochemistry stains with training; operating automated immunostainer.
  • Performs quality assurance procedures such as block and slide match, reports discrepancies per standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.
  • Performs related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records. Provide accurate information on work conducted for client billing purposes.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited Histotechnology Certification program may be acceptable with 3 years of laboratory experience that includes some histology experience.
  • High School Diploma/GED with 5 years of histology or related experience, including at least one yearof work experience in a laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, etc).

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • HTASCP certification preferred.

Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:

  • Computerexperience including MS Office, database, and email.
  • Telephone and Fax.
  • Experience with laboratory tools and equipment.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Work produced is subject to precise measure of quantity and quality; Attention to detail is critical to the successful performance of this job as it directly affects research outcomes.
  • Knowledge of normal human tissue morphology is essential. Able to perform paraffin as well as frozen sectioning, H&E staining, and to recognize discrepancies and take corrective action.
  • Strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.

Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
