Mellon Post-MFA Fellowship in Studio Art

The Art Department at Williams College invites applications for a two-year Mellon Post-MFA fellowship in Studio Art with a focus on Craft and Material Studies, beginning July 1, 2021. We welcome applicants from candidates who have completed their MFA within the last five years in addition to those who will have their MFA in hand by the start date of the appointment.

The successful candidate will be appointed full-time for a term of two years and will have a teaching load of one course each semester. The salary for this position is $55,000 per year. The fellow will also be provided with full benefits including health and dental insurance, a studio, plus an allowance of $3,000 per year for research and professional travel. Qualifications

We seek an individual with a rich understanding of material practices in fields including, but not limited to fiber, wood, stone, metal, clay, and glass. An expansive practice that includes decolonial and indigenous perspectives on tradition, craft, and aesthetics is encouraged. Likewise, a successful candidate will further ways of thinking about connections between art-making and sustainability, and how these elements intersect with geography, people, tradition, dignity, availability of material and labor, culture, and the importance of the handmade. The ability to help foster dialogue between art historians, artists, and students through these elements towards creating broader understandings of materiality and its place in history is a bonus.

• A cover letter that includes the specifics of your interest in this position, information about your teaching philosophy, and how you would enhance educational experiences and work effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. • Curriculum Vitae
• Brief descriptions of two proposed courses that include how you would address sustainable practices within the classroom. (limit 1 page)
• A portfolio consisting of no more than 15 images and or media samples with brief descriptions inserted below each image. The images should have a resolution of 72 dpi and a maximum measurement of 1024px on the longest side. Before uploading your images into Interfolio, please organize them and include descriptions in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google slides and export the portfolio into a PDF file that is not more than 100 MB. This PDF file may then be uploaded into Interfolio. Before submitting, please review the images for consistency of image size and legibility. (Each file size must be under 10MB.) To include video and audio files use YouTube and Vimeo links, please limit videos to under three minutes in duration.
• The names and contact information for three references. Only finalists will be asked to provide written recommendations at a later date.
