Mellon Post-MFA Fellowship in Studio Art
The Art Department at Williams College invites applications for a two-year Mellon Post-MFA fellowship in Studio Art with a focus on Craft and Material Studies, beginning July 1, 2021. We welcome applicants from candidates who have completed their MFA within the last five years in addition to those who will have their MFA in hand by the start date of the appointment.
The successful candidate will be appointed full-time for a term of two years and will have a teaching load of one course each semester. The salary for this position is $55,000 per year. The fellow will also be provided with full benefits including health and dental insurance, a studio, plus an allowance of $3,000 per year for research and professional travel. Information about the Williams Art Department can be found at https://art.williams.edu/ .
Qualifications
We seek an individual with a rich understanding of material practices in fields including, but not limited to fiber, wood, stone, metal, clay, and glass. An expansive practice that includes decolonial and indigenous perspectives on tradition, craft, and aesthetics is encouraged. Likewise, a successful candidate will further ways of thinking about connections between art-making and sustainability, and how these elements intersect with geography, people, tradition, dignity, availability of material and labor, culture, and the importance of the handmade. The ability to help foster dialogue between art historians, artists, and students through these elements towards creating broader understandings of materiality and its place in history is a bonus.
We especially welcome applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the academy. Williams is an institution that places a high value on undergraduate teaching; consequently, we strongly prefer applicants who can demonstrate a capacity for excellent teaching and a commitment to working effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religious views, socioeconomic status, and more.
