Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for the full-time, exempt position of Accountant. This position applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information, reconcile transactions, prepare journal entries, prepare audit worksheets, assess and maintain internal controls, and perform other duties as assigned by the Controller. This position reports to the Controller and is located in River Forest, IL.

Responsibilities/Duties: 

  • Record journal entries accurately and timely and with adequate supporting documentation, and/or review recorded entries for accuracy; Review and adjust recurring entries as necessary
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries on a monthly basis and at fiscal year-end for monthly/year end closing purposes
  • Analyze financial information for variances, completeness and accuracy, including review of monthly financial reports for significant variances
  • Answer questions of managers, directors and other employees regarding financial reports; Research and record any needed corrections on a timely basis
  • Monitor General Ledger accounts that receive transactions from other modules/departments, and communicate regularly with those departments regarding any discrepancies or anomalies that feed through, especially: Student Business Services (A/R), Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Development (gifts)
  • Assist in the monitoring and releasing of restricted funds as assigned
  • Prepare and maintain documentation of all assigned work processes
  • Monitor US DOE or other governmental accounting compliance requirements
  • Assist the Controller in preparation and accounting for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting closes
  • Assist other staff members and external auditors during the annual audit cycle by answering questions, locating information, balancing accounts, preparing financial summaries/reports and performing other duties as required. Update Annual Audit Worksheets on a monthly basis as required

Skill Sets: 

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports such as: expense accounts, bank statements, journal entries, balance sheets, income statements, and general ledger spread sheets
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from external auditors and other Finance Department staff members
  • Mathematical skills including the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions and percentages and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry to practical situations
  • Reasoning skills including the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Thorough knowledge of current accounting and auditing practices and regulations
  • Good communication (verbal and written), organization and time management skills
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Excel is essential
  • Knowledge of fund accounting, not-for-profit accounting, and/or higher education accounting is desirable
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, as well as in coordination with other staff members and departments as needed

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required

Compensation and Benefits:
