Chestnut Hill College (CHC) seeks a Dean for the School of Undergraduate Studies, the largest of the College’s three academic units, serving traditional undergraduates with 35 academic majors on a landmark campus in Northwestern Philadelphia. Founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, CHC is an independent, Catholic institution that fosters excellence by providing a holistic education within a strong liberal arts tradition. The Dean of SUS will have the opportunity to work with faculty to develop a new vision for the College’s CORE requirements in addition to expanding a model for peer-based, collaborative learning within and outside the classroom. In cooperation with Student Life and other offices, the Dean will craft co-curricular experiences that leverage the College’s capacity in experiential learning, career development, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, student wellness, and campus ministry. The Dean will also have the opportunity to reach out to the regional community representing a diverse campus in one of the country’s most vibrant urban areas.
Requirements for the position include an earned doctorate, preferably in one of the disciplines represented in SUS, extensive experience overseeing the development and evaluation of academic programs, and experience supervising staff in academic programs and student academic support.
Responsibilities for the Dean SUS
Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty (VPAA), the Dean is a member of the Administration and serves on the President's Cabinet. The Dean of SUS provides leadership for the College’s full-time, residential, undergraduate academic programs and assumes administrative, supervisory, and operational responsibility for traditional undergraduate programs. In collaboration with the VPAA, the Dean works with Center Chairs and faculty in the preparation and implementation of new academic programs, majors, and minors; and in the ongoing review and assessment of existing programs. In conjunction with committees, the Dean reviews, revises, and formulates instructional and academic policies and programs. They supervise and provide administrative leadership for student support functions including the Disability Resource Center, the Interdisciplinary Honors Program, the Writing Center, the Math Center, Academic Advising, and the Foreign Language Resource Center. The Dean collaborates with the Centers, disciplines, and the Registrar’s Office on the planning and scheduling of courses, the allocation of teaching assignments, and the introduction of new courses. The Dean also works with the Registrar to prepare the Academic Calendar. As part of the leadership team in academic affairs, the Dean of SUS collaborates with the VPAA, the Dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Dean of School of Graduate Studies, the Dean of Library and Information Resources, the Executive Director for Assessment and Planning, and the Registrar to review policies, identify best practices, and address strategic opportunities for Academic Affairs at CHC.
The Dean of SUS works with the VPAA to make recommendations to the President on the hiring of full-time faculty whose service will be primarily within SUS. They also work with the VPAA in the periodic evaluation of SUS faculty. The Dean prepares and administers the budget for the School of Undergraduate Studies and reviews and supervises the budgets of the Centers and offices in conjunction with the VPAA and the other deans. With the Executive Director for Assessment and Planning, they oversee the assessment program in SUS and student evaluations for all courses. In collaboration with Center and discipline Chairs, the Dean oversees the hiring of and orientation for adjunct faculty within SUS and the subsequent distribution of contracts. They also review the preparation and publication of the SUS catalog and review other published information about SUS.
The Dean of SUS collaborates with the Dean of Student Life on the First Year Initiative program and collaborates with faculty to implement the Core Curriculum. With the Dean of Student Life, the Dean of SUS also co-chairs the retention committee. In the area of Academic Advising, they supervise the Director and along with advising staff provide information for faculty advisors, students, and all other appropriate personnel so as to foster academic excellence through a holistic approach to academic advising. The Dean’s office also coordinates the College’s Senior Seminar event each semester and oversees all academic honors and assemblies associated with SUS. In conjunction with Enrollment Management, the Dean supports outreach events including Open Houses and provides academic input and information for the recruitment and admissions process of SUS.
The Dean SUS serves ex-officio on the School of Undergraduate Studies Curriculum committee and the Undergraduate Academic Standards committee and attends meetings with the Faculty Senate Executive Board. The Dean serves on the academic review board for SUS and meets each semester to review student progress and determine which students will be placed on academic warning, probation, or dismissal. The Dean also serves on the Articulation Committee, which initiates and supervises the preparation and implementation of articulation or other agreements between the College and other institutions of higher education.
