UC San Diego is forging a new paradigm for engagement and collaboration between Engineering and the Social Sciences/Arts & Humanities. This faculty line is in Engineering or Computer Science, and is one of 13 ladder-rank faculty positions intended to unite STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences departments with African American and the Black Diaspora Studies through innovative research, coordinated teaching, and targeted service. Faculty will have multiple opportunities to engage with scholars across UCSD disciplines to address issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social and political influences focused on STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences, while also working within their home departments and professional communities.

The required job duties include developing an excellent research program, teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, and service activities.

Over the course of several years, faculty holding these positions will be expected to design and teach two undergraduate courses that align with the African American Studies Minor (AASM) or to demonstrate the equivalent through service to the AASM and by mentoring undergraduate students. Preferred candidate candidates will have research, teaching, and/or service which advances anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, and justice in Engineering and/or Computer Science. We welcome candidates whose experiences have facilitated their understandings of traditionally underrepresented racial minority communities. Preferred candidate are expected to have an inclusive stance on mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented racial minority undergraduate and graduate students. .Preferred candidates will have a research agenda easily related to factors of race/ethnicity, previous experiences teaching, mentoring, and supporting the advancement of underrepresented racial minority students, and/or a record of service activities that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Strong candidates will also have experience with or the desire to engage in interdisciplinary conversations and scholarship across UCSD disciplines.

Preferred candidates will also demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in a research area of interest within one or more of our six departments:

    Bioengineering (BENG), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (MAE), Nanoengineering (NANO), and/or Structural Engineering (SE).

Salary is based on published UC San Diego pay scales and competitive market conditions.
