The SmartState South Carolina Endowed Chair in Environmental and Biomedical Panomics is part of an integrated and highly collaborative effort at the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) to bring together faculty, students and staff from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the College of Charleston (CofC), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology on the Fort Johnson marine sciences campus.  This Endowed Chair will lead efforts to generate data and develop methods to annotate and integrate multiomics into biomedical research and practices designed to increase the understanding and public practices concerning environmental determinants of health in the state of South Carolina and beyond.


Competitive applicants will have a doctorate (PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent), a demonstrated track record as a scholar in a collaborative and collegial setting, and programmatic support from competitive extramural funding sources. Applicant should also have demonstrated leadership skills and will be experienced with computational analyses and integration of “omics” data across disciplines, such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, metagenomics, etc., and extensive experience in one or more “omics” fields. Experience with mechanisms for enhancing research value through economic development (e.g., intellectual property, interaction with relevant businesses, translational research activities) is an important attribute to build on the SmartState Program ( Experience as a collaborative team development scholar is essential, as well as a successful history in mentorship.


The appointee will be expected to: 1) develop a strong extramurally funded programmatic base tying together aspects of environmental and biomedical systems; 2) mentor research students in the doctoral and professional graduate programs at MUSC; 3) synergistically work with the companion Endowed Chair in Marine Environmental Biology at CofC and other researchers from HML partner institutions to lead efforts to integrate multiple “omics” studies; 4) develop collaborations beyond HML to promote clinical and translational science research. The appointee will join a thriving, collaborative research environment with ongoing programs in proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, lipidomics, and metagenomics programs at MUSC, CofC, and other HML partners. The appointee will collaboratively work to help develop visionary research projects involving health and environmental science. The coastal environment of Charleston offers an opportunity to collaboratively integrate sensitive coastal ecosystems into environmental and biomedical research with wider implications for human health.

This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, computational and aquaculture facilities.
