Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for multiple tenured/tenure-track faculty positions for a hiring cluster in Renewable Energy Systems. These cluster hires are an integral part of Mines’ strategic effort to grow in areas where we already have significant strengths.Mines is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.


These tenured and tenure-track positions are anticipated to begin in August 2021. In all, 4 positions are available with 2 candidates targeted for Electrical Engineering and the remaining 2 in other departments that include:  Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Petroleum Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Applied Math and Statistics. Qualified candidates with research with research expertise in renewable energy systems that may include one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:  (1) advanced energy systems; (2) electric machines, drives, and power electronics, (3) smart-grid development; (4) power systems engineering and control; (5) renewable energy storage and generation, (6) hydro or geothermal power generation; (7) grid optimization; and (8) cybersecurity for the future electric grid. 

We seek candidates excited to share in our mission to address the challenges of creating a sustainable global society by educating the next generation of scientists and engineers and by fostering an inclusive and diverse research and learning environment.  Successful applicants will also be able to collaborate through joint appointments, joint projects, shared students, etc. with the nearby National Renewable Energy Laboratory also based in Golden, Colorado.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a closely related discipline from an accredited program by the time the appointment begins.
  • Assistant Professor candidates must possess 0-3 years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field.
  • Associate Professor candidates must possess 4+ years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field as well as national distinction and a substantial record in research, teaching and/or service.
  • Full Professor candidates must possess 8+ years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field. Candidates must have international distinction and a substantial record in research, teaching and/or service as well as an established international reputation.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience and/or commitment to diversity, access, and inclusion efforts.
